About me and my therapy practice
Íø±¬ÃÅ accredited to work with adults and children, I qualified over 20 years ago and bring decades of experience working in the charity sector eg Mind, 2 bereavement charities, a charity supporting those who were sexually abused in childhood and charities offering general counselling to school children. This gives me a down to earth approach coupled with a unique ability to put you at your ease and hear whatever you need to say. My insights are gained not only from my initial psychodynamic training and extensive Continuous Professional Development (including Barnado's Certificate in Adoption Support Counselling 2023 and Shape of Grief's Level Three Advanced Certificate in Grief and Loss 2025) but through the thousands of people I have supported over the years.
My recent focus has been twofold:
1) Over 10 years working on the front line in bereavement, supporting bereaved adults, whether it be yesterday or some years ago. Supervising bereaved parents who are running support groups for other bereaved parents through the charity SLOW.
2)Over 5 years of in person general short and long term counselling with primary and secondary school children, in a school setting and privately. I also volunteer supervising volunteers supporting bereaved children and adults for a local charity.
Practice description
What do you need if you are bereaved?
Warmth, empathy, someone with an ability to put you at your ease, who knows bereavement inside out and can carry a little hope for you. Someone able to bring a little gentle humour at times if appropriate. Someone who carries their own experience of bereavement in the background, informing their approach, but doesn't share it with you - there are support groups you can be signposted to for that. I believe I have the passion, skills and experience to provide this for you. It may be you only need one or two sessions to get a handle on how you are grieving and that's fine - I won't be trying to push you into longer term work unless you feel it could benefit you. If you do find yourself interested in longer term work, my psychodynamic training equips me to help you gently explore your early life, identifying patterns which might be detrimental to your current relationships.
My capacity for empathy, cast iron commitment to confidentiality and gentle humour usually mean I form a strong therapeutic relationship quickly, however, if I am not for you, rest assured I can talk that through with you and suggest alternatives. I pride myself on being open and approachable and actively encourage you to let me know if anything isn't working for you.
My first session
What to expect from a first session - I will ask about what happened and any other bereavements. I will be interested in any previous experience of therapy - what went well and not so well to help us work out if we can work together.
If seeing me in person, my garden office is clean and welcoming, it's equipped with a toilet. You will need to enter via an alley way which is a little narrow in places.
I can be flexible about how we have our first session and am happy to offer Zoom, phone (£60) or in person (£70).
In our first session, I will gather some information such as details of your GP and any medications you are taking. I will take notes - purely as a memory jogger - in our first session but not in subsequent sessions.
