About me and my therapy practice
My name is Alison Fountain and I'm a Íø±¬ÃÅ accredited humanistic/integrative counsellor with 13 years post-qualifying experience.
I describe my counselling approach as humanistic/integrative, as I integrate the person-centred approach with Transactional Analysis.
I completed a postgraduate diploma (level 7) in counselling at York St John University in 2009 and gained valuable experience working as a trainee counsellor supporting adult clients at The Haven Counselling Centre, Hull.
I have since worked as a counsellor for a former Local Authority young people's mental health service (2012-2025).
I am available to counsel young people (11-19). I am also available to counsel adults at any stage of life.
I have a good understanding of neurodiversity both lived experience and in terms of supporting clients or parents navigating the SEND system.
I can arrange to meet clients for face to face sessions at a local community therapy room in Market Weighton (East Yorkshire). I also offer counselling sessions by telephone and online.
Practice description
The counselling support I offer is relational rather than clinical. We take the time to pace your sessions and build up a therapeutic, trusting relationship. I actively encourage clients to review whether I am somebody they feel comfortable talking with. This is an extremely important consideration when accessing counselling and if you find that support is not benefitting you, please know that it's really important to raise this.
There are many counsellors available that use other modalities which you may prefer based on your particular needs. Some of these theoretical approaches offer more structure to sessions and the counsellor may be more directive in their approach.
My belief is that many people who are considering counselling already know what they want to say, they just lack the confidence and self-belief to know who to share this with. They don't want to upset or offend others who may themselves be intrinsically connected to the difficulties they face. Clients may feel 'trapped' or overwhelmed by the conflicting feelings that these issues raise for them.
I have found in my own life and also through my work as a counsellor that talking things through really can help. Hearing yourself say things aloud that you normally only ever keep in your head can be very freeing.
Counselling is a type of support you can access for anything from a few sessions through to longer-term support, the choice is yours! I usually suggest that clients consider accessing support over 6 sessions and in the 5th session we review whether you are ready and wanting to end or if there's anything further you would like us to discuss. You are free however to end the support at any time.
If the issues you or a loved one are facing would benefit from an impartial, caring and compassionate listening ear, you are most welcome to contact me. We will arrange a free no obligation 30 minute telephone discussion so you can decide whether my service is something you'd like to access.
My first session
If you decide to proceed with sessions following the free no obligation 30 minute telephone discussion, we will agree whether to conduct our sessions by phone, online or in person at a community therapy room in Market Weighton (East Yorkshire).
I will usually suggest sending you a copy of the counselling agreement and other related information prior to your first session which will then allow us the time in our first session to discuss your needs and agree a way of working together.
