About me and my therapy practice

I know there are a dizzying number of therapists out there that you are attempting to choose between!   Considering counselling isn’t done lightly, it can feel daunting, but the anonymity, confidentiality and non-judgemental nature of counselling make it a unique experience that everyone can benefit from.

Life can be complex and challenging. Talking to friends and family can help but it's not always enough or appropriate - this is where seeking professional help for yourself comes in.

Whatever you bring, therapy can generally provide help and clarity.

Specialism

It sometimes becomes clear through sessions that a client’s issues stem from being raised by Emotionally Immature parents, eg parents with personality disorders such as narcissistic or emotionally unstable personality disorders.  I have developed a special interest and worked extensively in this field with clients.

Practice description

I work in a friendly, down-to-earth way to build a strong therapeutic relationship with you so that you feel safe to talk about and explore whatever's going on for you. You will be listened to in confidence, with respect and empathy, and without being judged.

For most people counselling is life-enhancing, enlightening and empowering (it can even be fun!). It should offer you new ways to understand yourself and others.

The aims of counselling are to provide greater understanding and perspective on your problems; to understand your reactions and behaviours better; to develop personal insight and self awareness; to achieve greater self-acceptance and gain a sense of empowerment.

You can then work towards a more positive sense of who you are, what is important to you, the choices you have and the goals you want to achieve, thus enabling lasting change.

My first session

Beyond some basic information gathering, your first session will be like all other sessions.   I don’t take notes or ask you to fill out forms, I don’t often set homework.

My therapy is about a safe space for you to talk and explore, and for us to collaborate to help you to find your way through whatever you’re struggling with.
