About me and my therapy practice

It can be such a daunting task trying to find the right counsellor. You see genuine smiles and read kind words about empathy, compassion and safe space, but what do those words really mean and how do you choose among all the options available?

Many people will get a feel from the photo, some will be guided by cost, and others will read every word, or skim through to get an overall feel. Much of the answer to that question will be based on your gut instinct.

If you feel that I might be the right fit for you, please get in touch. I offer a 30-minute free consultation, either over the phone, or online, so you can get an idea of how I work, and a feel for the kind of person I am.

To tell you something about the way I work: I'm passionate about creating a warm and trusting connection with my clients. I will be alongside you, no matter what you are going through. It can sometimes be hard in everyday life to find someone who will truly listen. Not give you opinions, or advice, or interfere, but actually hear how it is to walk in your shoes, or to view the world from your perspective.

Life can hit us hard, at anytime, sometimes when we least expect it, or at other times it can feel like at every turn there's an obstacle. It can really help to talk about it, and make all the difference in the world to be heard.

Practice description

The strength of the relationship between a counsellor and a client is the key to healing. That means that the partnership we form together in trust, honesty and in confidence, will give you the opportunity to really explore what has happened, or perhaps keeps happening to you. In our relationship you may come to understand the other relationships in your life, those that can bring more joy, or those that may not be working for either of you.

It may be that you have experienced a terrible loss, whether through bereavement, divorce, childlessness not through choice, loss of health or wellness, losing a job, or many of the other ways people can find themselves experiencing grief in their lives. It may not be another person, or a thing, it may be you who feels lost.

Having your pain witnessed is a first important step, expressing your sadness, honouring and mourning what has gone. Sometimes it may be necessary to let go of guilt and shame as a part of healing old wounds. It isn't always about finding ways to move on, those words don't always resonate, but it may, for you, be about integrating what you have lost into a new hope for the future.

Sometimes it can be helpful to know what type of therapy your counsellor has trained in. Mine is Gestalt therapy and I'm happy to explain more about it to you if you are curious. What I'd like you to know here is that it means that I look at the whole person you are: All your experiences and parts of you are equally important, but it is how what has happened to you is affecting you, in the here and now, that will be the focus of our work. I look at patterns that people get stuck in, the unfinished business that holds us back, the adjustments we have made along the way that stop us from really living as our true selves.

My first session

We can begin our work together by getting to know each other a little better in the free 30 minute consultation. You can tell me what has brought you to try therapy and what you are hoping to gain from counselling, and I can explain how I would work with you, and what our sessions would look and feel like. I welcome any questions you may have about how I work.

In our first session I would conduct a more formal assessment of your life experiences, your mental health challenges (if any), what brings you to counselling and what you would like to achieve. I aim to conduct a review of our progress every six weeks.

There is no set limit to the number of sessions. Some people require a few, some are looking for ongoing support through a particular challenge. It may be that counselling becomes part of your self-care. As with all of our work I am guided by you and your needs.
