About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Ash. I am a qualified integrative counsellor, which means the kind of therapy I offer draws from a variety of different theoretical approaches. Every therapeutic relationship is unique, and your preferences to how we work are key.
My aim is to offer you an opportunity to explore what you need in a safe and contained space, without judgement. However, I am not a ‘nodding dog’ or ‘blank screen’ type of therapist. I will work hard alongside you, to be an active partner in this process. Therapy done well can be life changing, and lifesaving, but it’s not always easy. The key element is the relationship we create.
Seeking support is tough, and I have a particular interest in supporting those who feel most intimidated by the process or are perhaps only reaching out for the first time. I understand that barriers to therapy can be deeply ingrained with culture, gender, family and life experiences all playing their part, but these can be overcome.
My approach will be tailored to your aims, but I recognise that there are may different ways to support healing and change. Whilst counselling and psychotherapy are often labelled as ‘talk therapies’ talking is not always the only way, and contrary to popular belief, you are never obliged to ‘tell all’.
My philosophy aligns with the trauma informed approaches, believing that ‘what happened to you’ matters and recognising the importance of neuroscientific developments in the therapy field and the specific considerations required to support healing from trauma.
Because of my own professional background I offer discounts to Military, Blue Light and associated Front-Line workers. I have an interest in working with diversity and supporting clients who experience challenges as a result of marginalisation.
Practice description
My office is based in Cranbrook town centre. There are free car parks throughout the town, with the closest just two minutes from the practice door. The location is comfortable, private, and used only for Counselling. There are regular bus services from Maidstone, Tenterden and Hawkhurst, and where possible I will support you to find times that align with public transport if you travel this way. The office it has step free access, and a waiting room.
My first session
I offer a free online consultation prior to starting. This usually lasts no more than 15 to 20 minutes. We do not start therapy in this short meeting, but it can help you establish what it might be like to work with me. It also provides an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you might have.
If you want to go ahead and meet, our first sessions will likely involve more questions than normal and some paperwork. This helps us to both understand a bit about what you are seeking and how we might work together. Thereafter the way we work can be more flexible, depending on what you want or need, session by session, and your preferences.
