About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I’m Penny Tierney, a qualified integrative counsellor, life coach, and mentor. Over the past seven years, I’ve supported a wide range of people, adults and young people through all sorts of life challenges. I believe everyone is unique and deserves an approach that fits them personally, not a one-size-fits-all solution.
My aim is to create a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental space where you can feel comfortable to explore whatever’s going on in your life. Together, we’ll work through your feelings, thoughts, and situations to help you gain clarity, build resilience, and find practical ways to improve your well-being. I’m here to support you on your journey towards feeling more like yourself again and living a life that feels meaningful to you.
Everyone’s needs are different, so I offer a flexible approach to how we work together. Some clients prefer open-ended sessions where we take things at their own pace, while others might come for just a one-off session to get some clarity or support around a specific issue.
Our sessions can be more structured if that’s helpful for you, for example, working toward particular goals or more open and exploratory, depending on what feels right. Whether you're looking for short-term support or longer-term work, we can shape the process around what works best for you.
Practice description
I’m what’s called an integrative counsellor. That means I don’t stick to just one therapy style or method. Instead, I draw on lots of different approaches and techniques, choosing what feels right for you and your situation. My goal is to support you as a whole person, mind, body, and spirit.
Some of the main therapies I use include:
Person-Centred Therapy: This is about creating a kind and accepting space where you can be yourself and feel heard without judgment. I offer empathy and support to help you explore your feelings at your own pace.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, or unhelpful thoughts, I use CBT tools to help you understand and shift those patterns so you can feel better day-to-day.
Psychodynamic Therapy: Sometimes, things from our past or unconscious feelings affect how we think and act now. This approach helps us uncover those patterns so you can gain insight and freedom.
Existential Therapy: Life can bring up big questions about meaning, purpose, identity, or freedom.
Mindfulness, Creativity, and Self-Compassion: I often bring in creative exercises, mindfulness practices, and self-kindness techniques to help you connect with yourself in new, healing ways.
Spiritual and Faith Issues: I understand that spirituality can be a big part of your life. I’m happy to support you in exploring these parts of yourself with sensitivity and respect.
The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of the work we do together.
The most important part of therapy is the relationship between us. I know that starting therapy can feel a bit scary or unsure, so I make it my priority to create a space where you feel safe, accepted, and respected.
I’m warm, straightforward, and down-to-earth. You can expect honesty and kindness from me, and I encourage you to be open about how you’re feeling both in and outside our sessions. Therapy is a journey we take together, and I’m here to walk alongside you.
My first session
Before Our First Session
Once you get in touch, we can arrange a free 20-minute phone call, no pressure, no obligation. It’s a chance for you to ask any questions and get a feel for whether you think we’re a good fit to work together.
If you decide to go ahead, I’ll send over a few simple forms to gather some basic info before we meet. This just helps me get a sense of what’s going on for you and how I can best support you.
In our first session, we’ll take things at your pace. You can share as much or as little as you feel ready to. We’ll talk through what’s brought you here, what you’d like to get out of the sessions, and how we can move forward together. Most importantly, it’s a safe space for you to feel heard and supported.
What I can help with
