About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Andrew, a qualified Counsellor dedicated to supporting individuals and families through the pain and complexity of miscarriage and stillbirth.

I provide a safe, compassionate space where you can explore your feelings, process your experiences, and find your way toward healing at your own pace.

My approach is person-centred — meaning our sessions are guided by you, your story, and what feels right for you. I believe in the power of genuine connection, empathy, and understanding as the foundation for growth and recovery.

If you’re seeking support after loss, know that you don’t have to walk this path alone. Together, we can work gently toward hope, strength, and self-compassion.

Practice description

At Andrew Laidlaw Counselling, my approach is grounded in the belief that every person has the capacity for growth, healing, and self-understanding — given the right space and support.

Person-Centred Approach

I work from a person-centred perspective, which means our sessions are guided by you and your experiences. You decide what feels important to explore, and I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be heard and understood at your own pace.

 Compassion and Connection

Central to my work is empathy and genuine connection. I aim to build a trusting relationship where you feel accepted for who you are, without pressure or expectation. Together, we can explore your thoughts and emotions in a way that feels supportive and empowering.

Specialist Focus on Miscarriage and Stillbirth

I have a specialist interest in supporting individuals and couples through the grief of miscarriage and stillbirth. I understand the profound emotional impact of loss, and I offer a sensitive, understanding environment where you can express your grief openly and begin to find meaning and hope again.

 Collaborative and Flexible

Counselling is a collaborative process — we work together to understand what you need from therapy. Whether it’s short-term support for a specific issue or longer-term exploration, I tailor my approach to fit your unique situation and goals.

My first session

What to Expect from Your First Counselling Session

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting — but it’s also a brave and positive move toward understanding and healing. Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard and respected.

 A Warm Welcome

We’ll begin with a gentle conversation about what brings you to counselling and what you hope to gain from our time together. There’s no pressure to share anything before you’re ready — you set the pace.

 Understanding Your Story

I’ll ask some questions to learn more about your experiences, current challenges, and any relevant background information. This helps me understand how best to support you and tailor sessions to your individual needs.

 How Counselling Works

We’ll discuss how counselling sessions are structured, confidentiality, and what you can expect between sessions. This is also your time to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have.

Setting Goals Together

Together, we’ll begin to outline your goals — whether that’s finding ways to cope, understanding your emotions, or exploring personal growth. These goals can evolve as our work progresses.

 Moving Forward

By the end of the session, you’ll have a sense of what ongoing sessions may look like and how counselling can support you. Many clients leave their first session feeling relieved, lighter, and more hopeful.
