About me and my therapy practice
Hello and welcome.
I'm a counsellor who believes that counselling can work on many levels to help you live a more fulfilling life - from relationship building starting with our own therapeutic relationship, through encouraging self-knowledge and self-awareness through the process of self-expression, and exploring various approaches and perspectives that might throw light on your issues in a new and helpful way.
Counselling is a unique and personal experience, just like each one of us. Ultimately I believe in you, your potential and your essential worth. I have had lived experience of depression and have also seen close at hand the effects of addiction, living with chronic illness, identity issues, low self-esteem and ocd thinking, so these are the areas that I feel most knowledgeable and most passionately about.
However, often the 'issues' we have, have similar roots that reflect universal human needs and so although it can be really helpful to find a counsellor who understands your situation first or second hand, it's also vital that you have a counsellor who can really listen, understand and value you. I try my best to be really present for you.
I have counselling experience in mental health charitable organisations and working on helplines.
I work according to your need, and this may be short-term or longer term work, essentially it's your choice.
I work under the ethical and professional guidelines of the Íø±¬ÃÅ Ethical Framework which you can access on their website. This should reassure you that I have your interests at heart.
I was drawn to counselling because I wanted to connect and work authentically with people, and enable others to find a way to live with less fear, more confidence and more support networks. I felt that this element was being lost in our society.
I have a degree in Sociology/Philosophy, and a background mainly in the education sector.
Practice description
The reasons for someone choosing to see a counsellor are as wide-ranging and complex as the human condition itself. Whatever thoughts, feelings or behaviours you are struggling with, I offer a safe, compassionate and private space for you to work through your concerns without feeling judged. If you feel comfortable with your counsellor, you will find it easier to explore and express yourself. This increased awareness and reflection can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and enrichment of your experiences. Change is not solely action-based, but includes internal shifts within, which can give you new perspectives, release stuckness and facilitate the changes you would like to make. If you're open to it, sometimes I like to work in creative ways, alongside talking therapy, as I find it often helps express parts of you that might otherwise be difficult to access. This is gentle and nuanced and I'm guided by you as much as you are by me. This might involve visualisation, body work, small world role play, drawing or writing.
My first session
Perhaps you have a clear idea of your issues and goals. Or perhaps you just need a safe space to talk and to be heard.Whether you're faced with challenging life circumstances or are feeling stuck, confused, overwhelmed, anxious or depressed, even if you can't pinpoint why, or just want a safe place to talk freely, please get in touch.
It's important to find the right counsellor for you. I offer the first session for free by telephone, where we can discuss what you're wanting from counselling, and then you can decide if you would like to continue sessions with me.
