About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Julian. I am a qualified integrative counsellor, have a BA(hons) degree in philosophy and psychology, am insured and am a registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (Íø±¬ÃÅ). Prior to working as a therapist, I have worked as a peer-mentor, a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) teaching assistant, a residential support worker supporting vulnerable young people and as an assisted living care worker. My approach is based in a friendly and open attitude to those who I am supporting, which draws from personal ethics based in care and responsibility. As well as these personal ethics, my practice works in accordance with the Íø±¬ÃÅ ethical framework.
I offer ecotherapeutic counselling, to provide a holistic therapeutic experience for clients. This is based on an integration of the ecotherapeutic models of shinrin yoku and wild therapy with the psychotherapeutic approaches of person centered therapy, existential therapy, gestalt therapy, psychosynthesis and transactional analysis - I can also include mindfulness exercises and/or philosophical therapy in our work, if these would be useful to you. This is to seek to provide a therapy experience that meets the unique individuality of the client/you and their/your life experience with regards to your being in the wholeness of the world.
Practice description
In the event of weather conditions that make it impossible to safely conduct sessions outdoors, the session will be moved online with a meeting invite sent to you via email.
Sessions are charged at a standard rate of £60.00, payable through bank transfer, PayPal or in cash. Payments can be made in advance or at the end of the session, in accordance with your needs. If you would struggle to pay the full fee, I can offer concessions - sessions charged at a concessionary rate would be limited to an agreed upon number of sessions, negotiated as best as possible to meet both of our needs; which can be reviewed as we go on with agreed upon changes made.
My practice is anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive, which means that I actively work to ensure fair and equal treatment for everyone, regardless of race/ethnicity, religion/belief or non-religion/disbelief, sexual orientation, gender, biological sex, age, ability, marital status or national origin, and seek to prevent and challenge discrimination and oppression. This means that I would not decline working with you based on any of the aforementioned characteristics. This also means that in our work I will seek to prevent or challenge any discriminating or oppressive treatment towards you whilst working outdoors. As an active anti-oppression and anti-discrimination practitioner, I might ask how I can better support you at points throughout our work, to improve the support that I provide; you are free to not say how I could do this, but this might impact on my ability to support you - we can return to this as needed throughout our work.
My first session
I offer a free 30 minute video consultation before we have our first therapeutic session, to assess if I am the right therapist for you. The three aims of these consultations are to say hello and for you to share what has brought you to seek therapy, to discuss my therapeutic contract, which I’ll send you before the consultation, and then to decide if we will book a first session. If you decide at the end of the consultation that you wish to proceed then we will pencil in a first session at a regular time and location, that will be confirmed when I receive the signed contract.
Each first therapy session is different for each different client and will be something that we collaboratively co-create together. There are themes though that tend to happen in first sessions, which I would likely encourage us towards. These themes include therapy goals and what motivates or gives you reason to engage in therapy, how you will maintain your mental health hygiene between sessions and thoughts regarding what ending might look like.
