About me and my therapy practice
Hi there
I'm Heather. I'm a warm, fair, empathic and genuine person who loves the work I do with clients.
I would describe myself as a trauma-informed, person-centred counsellor but maybe that doesn't mean much?
Essentially, I don't ask what is wrong with you, I ask what happened to you? And I have faith in the fact that you are the expert in yourself and so I listen to and trust in you to find your way to healing.
I don't judge, I care about what you are telling me, and I try actively to put myself in your shoes. I ask myself, what must it feel like to have experienced your life?
For the past few years, I've worked with a charity in Stoke providing therapy for men and women who have experienced multiple traumas such as sexual and domestic violence.
I've been working deeply with my clients and their stories, listening to things that people thought that they might never share. I've worked as their guide, navigating through uncharted waters; patient and steady when things get rough.
I also have a real interest in supporting people through their pregnancies and into new parenthood. I researched the effects of birth trauma on mothers for my Masters in Psychotherapy. What I found was that many people, mums and dads, are out there who are struggling with their mental health in the ante and post-partum period. It can be a very tough time and I want to help people feel less alone with their feelings.
Practice description
As a therapist, I welcome diversity. In my practice I work (or have worked) with clients who are from a range of cultural backgrounds, who are neurodivergent, who are gender fluid, identify as LGBTQIA+ or in non-traditional relationships.
Currently, I work solely online. I offer hourly sessions at a schedule that suits you. I don't put a limit on the amount of sessions that you have but always work toward a moment when I'm no longer needed.
I am happy to work with students seeking to meet their required therapeutic hours at a concessionary price. All students should check the criteria required of a therapist from their training institution. Please get in touch to find out more.
When I work online, I work from a private site where we can talk in complete privacy. I will always be open and transparent with you about how I work, and I will always offer a space which is truly yours for one hour.
Qualifications
MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy (Distinction)
Graduate Certificate in Counselling (Pass)
BSc in Psychology and Biology (First Class Honours)
In addition to my private practice, I am also a lecturer at Keele University on the Masters course, supervising students as they undertake their research dissertations. This ensures that I continually taking on new information in the counselling field and continuing my own professional development.
My first session
It can be really hard to know who to pick from a huge list of therapists who may not feel very different to each other.
To help you make a decision, I offer an initial free 30 minute chat so that we can get to know each other a bit better.
The healing that happens in therapy lies within the relationship you build with your therapist, and so it's important to feel comfortable with your choice. If we have a chat, and you don't think that I'm the person for you, that's okay.
What I do know is that there will be someone who you do feel comfortable with, and who can help you with whatever it is you need.
If, after the call, you decide you would like to work with me, we can agree a time and date for our first session together.
I shall also send you a contract that outlines my ethical responsibility to you as a client and some important information about confidentiality. It will also outline payment details and the cancellation policy. Additionally, I shall send you a contact form that will ask for details of a next of kin and your GP surgery.
If you have any other questions, drop me an email or a text message and I am happy to answer them.
