About me and my therapy practice

I work with both individuals and couples.

As an individual, if you are feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, or impacted by loss, I can help.  You may feel stuck, unable to move forward, and may struggle with sleep or motivation. You may be crushed by loss, wondering how to go on, what the future may hold, and how to navigate your new reality.

For couples: your relationship may have hit a crisis point, or you may want to pre-empt any potential issues you foresee may occur in the future. Whether it鈥檚 exploring how to deal with infidelity, loss of trust, breakdown in communications, or just to look at areas where you feel there are dis-connects between you and your partner, I offer a non-partisan space to explore these, challenging each of you to examine what a better relationship would look like, and offering practical steps to achieve it.

I use an integrative approach, blending various therapeutic methods to suit each person's needs. This might involve using tools and techniques to understand and manage your anxieties, or it may involve examining your childhood experiences, or identifying unconscious patterns to uncover deeper insights into your thoughts and behaviours. When beneficial, I integrate mindfulness practices to help manage difficult emotions.

My psychotherapy practice is informed by my own experiences, both personal and professional. I worked in businesse for many years before training in psychotherapy. I spent some years volunteering my time as a counsellor in Croydon, where I encountered multiple presentations, including anxiety, depression, and bereavement, and many forms of neurodiversity, including ADHD and autism, with my clients ranging in age from 18 to 75.

I am dedicated to supporting clients through life's challenges, helping them build resilience, gain self-awareness, re-balance their lives, and form healthier relationships. I believe in everyone's potential for growth and am committed to guiding clients on their personal journeys toward well-being.

Practice description

Counselling can seem daunting, so to help set you at ease I offer a free consultation, which can be done online, or in-person in rooms near Clapham Junction, or close to Clapham High Street (this is particularly helpful in familiarising yourself with the environment we鈥檇 be working in). Whether you鈥檙e seeking individual counselling, or couples counselling, we鈥檒l have a chat about what has brought you to counselling, and what you hope to achieve by it. I will offer up an idea of what approach I think would be suitable for you, and what this would entail; you鈥檒l be given the time to ask any questions.

There is no commitment at this stage, but assuming you wish to commit, we can agree when and how we would meet, either during this consultation, or afterwards by email. I don鈥檛 ask clients to commit to a fixed number of sessions, as I don鈥檛 think anybody could know on the basis of so short a meeting how many are needed.

Sessions are 50-minutes long and begin on the hour. Online sessions will be video calls via Google Meet or Teams. In-person sessions are in comfortable rooms 鈥 refreshments are available in the waiting areas. Normally they would be weekly, at the same time each week, but of course there is flexibility for holidays/work trips etc.

The type of therapy I will use will depend on the presentation. For couples, I will tend to use Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) as a means of 鈥渦nsticking鈥 the problems that you come with, with a view to delivering benefits within a few sessions. For individuals, I find Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is best for Anxiety, but I also offer Psychodynamic therapy for low mood, depression, generalised anxieties, grief etc.

I offer both long-term and short-term therapy. I have clients that have worked with me for years, others who find just a few sessions is what they need. We will work together session by session to determine how much you believe you need to deliver you the benefits you鈥檙e looking for.

My first session

Prior to the first session I will ask you to read and sign a client agreement. This demonstrates my professional qualifications, the boundaries of confidentiality, and my commitment to ethical practice as per the 网爆门 Ethical Framework, as well as my terms and conditions. For individuals, depending on your presentation, I may also ask you to fill in a short industry-standard questionnaire helping to quantify your mood and level of anxiety. We may then repeat this exercise in later sessions, as a means of assessing progress made.

During the first session itself we鈥檒l go back through the issues facing you, and what you hope to achieve. For individuals, we then proceed according to one of the key 网爆门 ethical principles 鈥 Autonomy. i.e., you determine what you want to bring. If we are using CBT, particularly effective for dealing with Anxiety, we will talk together to understand the focus of your anxiety, and your current strategies for managing it, and I will outline what a treatment plan looks like, and the homework this entails. For others, we will explore your past, and its connections to your present issues.

For couples, I will take a more prescriptive approach, challenging each of you in a non-partisan way, with the relationship between you being the main focus of the work. Where the relationship is in crisis, I will particularly challenge on what 鈥済ood鈥 looks like, and how to go about getting there.
