About me and my therapy practice

Healing trauma takes time, and a truly trauma-informed approach.

Many of us carry invisible wounds from childhood: the hypervigilance from growing up walking on eggshells, the self-criticism derived from caregivers who couldn't regulate their own emotions, or the deep sense of not being enough despite our achievements.

Complex and developmental trauma doesn't always look like what people expect, but it lives in our bodies and shapes how we see ourselves and the world.

I'm Shabnum, a trauma specialist who understands these struggles both professionally and personally.

I work specifically with adults healing from childhood trauma, emotional neglect, and the lasting effects of growing up in environments where safety - physical or emotional - wasn't guaranteed.

Currently completing advanced Complex Trauma Certification (CCTP/CCTP-II) with Dr. Janina Fisher.

I follow the evidence-based tri-phasic model in my approach to trauma recovery:

- Phase 1: Emotional Safety and Symptom Stabilisation (I have enough safety and stability in my life to address my trauma)

- Phase 2: Processing Traumatic Memories: with support (I can feel my emotions and grieve)

- Phase 3: Integration and Reconnection (I am more than my trauma)

As a second-generation Asian immigrant, I bring a nuanced understanding of cultural and religious issues, including identity struggles and family expectations. I support clients whose cultural or neurodivergent identities intersect with trauma. Whatever your background, you'll find a non-judgmental, supportive space where you can bring your whole self: your fears, hopes, and everything in between.

Where would you like to start?

Practice description

I work with people impacted by childhood complex, relational, and intergenerational trauma. You might have grown up in an unpredictable or emotionally shut-down environment, and find yourself stuck in patterns of self-doubt, over-responsibility, or people-pleasing.

Recovery from trauma takes time, care, and a flexible, supportive, validating approach.

My style is collaborative, integrative and person-centred. We鈥檒l work together to understand your needs and draw on a range of approaches to support you - at your pace, in a way that feels safe and empowering.

I鈥檓 trained in and informed by:

- Internal Family Systems (IFS)

- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

- Psychodynamic therapy

At the heart of all of it is the relationship between us: a space built on empathy, attunement, and genuine human connection. This relational way of working is often the turning point for people who鈥檝e felt unseen, unheard, or unsafe in relationships before. If you鈥檙e craving a warm, collaborative space to feel truly known, that鈥檚 what you鈥檒l find here.

Working with me means having someone walk alongside you - not leading, not following, but journeying with you. I aim to create a space where you feel safe, held and deeply seen.

Client Testimonials:

鈥淲orking with Shabnum has been a profoundly healing experience. Her empathy, understanding, and guidance have supported me through a past and present I never thought I could overcome. I have never felt so seen and held in a therapeutic space. Having had bad experiences with therapists in the past, Shabnum restored my faith in therapy and the possibility of healing from trauma. I will always be grateful for the impact she has had on my life.鈥

鈥淵ou didn鈥檛 state the obvious, as other therapists in the past have done. You asked me questions which led me to have deeper insights. I have really enjoyed our sessions and have learned a lot.鈥

My first session

I know it can feel daunting to reach out to a new therapist, so I offer a free 20-minute clarity call. It鈥檚 a chance to talk through what鈥檚 bringing you to therapy, ask any questions you have, and see if we鈥檙e a good fit :)

Our first full session (usually 50 minutes) will include an initial assessment. I鈥檒l ask some background questions, and you鈥檙e welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
