About me and my therapy practice
I work with adults, in a collaborative, relational way, medium to long term for substantial psychological change. We'll measure our progress roughly every 6 weeks, against your goals and some standard psychological metrics.
I very much prefer face to face work, and weekly sessions, but I do offer some flexibility so as to avoid being inaccessible to those with other commitments, such as shift-work, childcare responsibilities and demanding careers.
I bring my psychological expertise and clinical experience - but also myself as an individual - into our sessions. You are the expert of your own life experiences and I respect that. I ask lots of questions so that I can attune to your experiences, not assume how you think or feel.
I'm not looking for quick-fixes for emotional discomfort; although I can advise on calming, distracting or stabilising tactics. I am more interested in helping you build your emotional resilience by being present with you while you explore the meanings and experiences behind that discomfort. Typically you emerge from this with a clearer understanding of the past, better understanding of your own patterns and more choice in how to react to future stressors.
This clarity and freedom can be truly transformational, especially if you have been feeling stuck or exhausted.
Practice description
I'm an integrative therapist - I have developed my own treatment framework using fundamental elements of the humanistic philosophy and theoretical understanding from the psychoanalytic tradition. This might not mean much to you - although I'm always happy to explain further. But in essence, my goals are to:
- respect your right to choose what to do
- offer an accepting relationship, which makes it safe for us to...
- explore your difficulties. Offering my support, while exploring with curiosity and the challenge of a different perspective. Sometimes I'll get it wrong, and that's good because it brings us closer to the truth.
- improve your emotional resilience, thereby increasing your ability to face difficult things - past, present or future - with less overwhelm and more freedom to take positive action.
My first session
We'll start by going through the client-counsellor agreement, so that we both know what to expect from each other. Things such as confidentiality, cancellation policy, safety, etc. are covered upfront.
I then take you through a series of questions from standard psychotherapeutic questionnaires, to benchmark how you are feeling this week. This helps me to assess risk and helps us see how things change over time for you.
We'll then discuss your goals for therapy and begin a process of unrushed questioning, so that I can gently explore your context and main difficulties - this normally takes more than one session.
