About me and my therapy practice
As a highly qualified and experienced psychotherapist, I offer a comprehensive range of therapeutic services, drawing upon my integrated training in psychodynamic and systemic approaches, alongside my qualifications as a Family Therapist and Practitioner/Counselling Psychologist, and regulation by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
My areas of specialisation include family therapy, couples therapy, and individual psychotherapy, providing interpersonal psychodynamic systemic interventions. I conduct thorough assessments and reviews for diagnostic purposes within a therapeutic context and offer trauma-informed therapy focused on reconciliation and the promotion of rehabilitative and psychological well-being.
My practice encompasses a variety of modalities, ranging from focused individual counselling and psychotherapy to broader group support, such as family and couples counselling and psychotherapy. My psychological methodological training equips me to deliver streamlined mental capacity assessments, psychological diagnostic and assessment reports, and medico-legal evaluations pertaining to traumatic stress.
In addition to therapeutic interventions, I provide coaching in lifestyle management and offer pragmatic insights informed by organisational psychology. I also assist clients with stress management, phobia processing, and the development of exposure-based treatment plans.
I possess specific expertise and extensive experience working across the lifespan, from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and neurodevelopmental stages through to adult and elder psychiatric care. I have a particular interest in Autistic Spectrum Disorders and the critical role of timely diagnosis in mitigating subsequent challenges in educational and social interactions.
My therapeutic style fosters a relaxed and supportive environment, while maintaining a structured approach tailored to the individual needs and level of support required by each client.
Practice description
The practice I have developed is an individualised professional environment where I am able to form strong links with the local health board and Swansea University for academia, although being a small private practitioner allows me to apply myself entirely into the clientele who should require my services. I have a friendly, welcoming environment, which is positioned in a business facility with many other independent organisations, who's visitors are frequent and you'll therefore feel at ease upon entering the centre, as all visitors are provisioned for in a spacious, modern atrium with plentyful space to either enjoy a beverage hot or cold prior to the appointment starting, or to sit and reflect upon what you feel you wish to gain from your visit. I have an average sized room which doubles as a treatment room as well as a corner space for my office functions. We would make use of my lounged area complented by a sofa, fidgets to ease anxiety if needed and the feeling of secure and private consultation. The room is beyond our fobbed controlled access doors to prevent unauthorised persons, and there are male, female and disabled toilet facilities located next door to my treatment room. There is plentyful parking to the front and the rear of the building and situated a short walk from the beach front in Aberavon.
My first session
This session is mostly focused on exploring the intended purpose, expectations and feedback from myself in regards to what I feel is a relatable therapy modality, ensuring that I not only identify my ability in helping you, but provide you with a view of what I feel I can assist you with and map out how, through emotive or thought provoking matters which has caused you to seek the support of a therapeutic practitioner, and what can be expected in if you continue the journey.
An important factor is that sometimes individuals can be the absolute guide you are looking for, who is well equipped to help you navigate and be key in working together to achieve the best outcome for you. However, not all individuals have that professional therapeutic rapport to move forward. In the rare occasion this occurs, I provide freedom and confidence to relate that back to me before any real progress is attempted to avoid causing further issues, and if it isn't something we can work on or adjust as something crucial hasn't been shared, then I welcome this feedback so I can either bridge a referral to another colleague, or assist in the search of someone better suited.
If the rapport has been easy to establish, at the first session you can expect at the least for the therapeutic process to begin, although often it will take time to build confidence and trust, but a fair and balanced conversational assessment would've taken place and you'd be advised on where you can access the notes or assessment paperwork I complete as part of your therapy and will leave each session with a summarised account and a focused strategy for the next session booked into the diary.
