About me and my therapy practice
I specialise in working with women at transitional stages in life, whether that’s leaving home, becoming a parent or an empty nester, changing career or retiring, learning to live with illness or disability, experiencing bereavement or the end of a relationship.
You might feel that you don’t know yourself any more, that you are overwhelmed, filled with anxiety for the future. A major life event might have smashed to pieces the world you thought you knew. Your sleep is affected, you no longer feel joy and hope, peace and security.
Unexpected change - and sometimes the change that we have looked forward to - can leave us feeling lost, frightened, and struggling. I know how hard it is to feel that we no longer know who we are or understand our path in life. Bereavement, divorce, and other traumatic life events can shatter our confidence that we know how to cope.
When we’re in pain we want to feel better immediately. The act of telling me about what you are feeling can give you an instant feeling of relief. That’s just the start of the process, though, as it takes time for us to get to know each other, for trust and confidence to develop.
My counselling room is a space where you can take time away from the external pressures to bring your pain, confusion, anger, and sadness. It’s a place where you can be real, where you don’t have to put on a brave face, or hold everything together. I don’t tell you what to do, or give advice, but I help you to explore and understand your own needs, experiences and patterns of behaviour, to find a healthy, meaningful way forward.
I have a Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling. My core approach is person-centred, but I also use elements of CBT, Transactional Analysis and Attachment Theory.
I offer private counselling either online or in person.
If you’d like to talk to me, I offer a no-charge initial online consultation. I’d love to hear from you at caroleheseltoncounselling@outlook.com
Practice description
Working Together
If you decide you would like us to start working together, we will agree a number of sessions – usually for an initial six weeks and review our progress at the end of that time and decide whether you wish to carry on. Ideally sessions should be weekly but when we book a series of sessions in, we can take account of holidays or times when you aren’t able to attend. As we come to the end of our sessions together we might move to fortnightly sessions in preparation for finishing our work together if that feels helpful
Fees: £65 for a 50-minute online session or in-person session held in St Albans. Parking available.
Fees are payable through online payment 24 hours in advance of each session.
My first session
You need a counsellor you feel comfortable to talk to and the initial free consultation session is an opportunity for us to get to know more about each other to decide if we will be able to work together well.
We will talk about what's going on for you at the moment and how counselling might be able to help you and discuss any questions you might have.
You might want to talk to a few different counsellors to work out who feels the best fit for you.
You can then decide whether or not you'd like to go ahead with booking some sessions.
If you do decide to go ahead I will send you my contract for you to read through so that we can discuss any questions you might have about that at our first full session.
