About me and my therapy practice
Life is not a self-improvement project. Life is to be valued, lived and loved.
Choosing to work with a therapist is a personal decision which is not necessarily about what is wrong in one’s life. It may be that you find yourself considering issues and navigating situations in which you would appreciate a different perspective. You might desire a completely confidential and non judgemental space in which you can be curious about yourself and others; and in which you might explore what it means to be to you. Working together we might like to consider your needs and wants; and how to be able to express those to yourself and to others.
My professional concern is with an understanding of your life and how to be with you in such a way that sooner or later you find your way to some reasonable degree of acceptance, equanimity , satisfaction, freedom and well being in your life.
Practice description
In my practice I take an Integrative approach based on my training in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling. This means I draw on different ways of thinking about therapy.
It may help you to know that my first degree, from Columbia New York, was in Comparative Literature. I speak conversational French and Spanish, basic Japanese. My first Master’s was in Victorian Communication and Culture from UCL. My second Master’s, is, more topically, in Psychotherapy and Counselling from Regent’s University, London.
Using psychodynamic theory we might consider how your past experiences and relationships impact your current ones. Applying a person centred approach we would focus on your own ability to determine what is best for you. Person centred therapy believes in each individuals innate capacity for growth and change.
Depending on your needs I may suggest specific techniques from other modalities such as CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), TA (Transactional Analysis) and EFFT (Emotion Focused Family Therapy). I also place great importance on self-compassion; for oneself and for others. Many clients are surprised by the value and significance of self-compassion.
Although I do offer long term therapy I prefer to work on a ten or twelve session basis. I find this gives you and I the opportunity to focus our efforts in determining the subject and scope of our work together.
You are free to end therapy at any time.
My first session
Finding a therapist may be a slightly scary or nerve wracking endeavour. Finding someone with whom you feel comfortable and at ease is vital. Therefore I offer a 20 minute conversation online without charge for us to determine if and how we might work together. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about therapy (with me).
If we choose to go ahead then our sessions (50 minutes) would be on a regular basis; usually weekly although I would consider fortnightly. Before our first session I would ask you to complete a short form to help us assess how we move forward.
