About me and my therapy practice

Hi, if this is the first time you have tried counselling I know this can feel like a big step. Finding the right counsellor or therapist can seem overwhelming with so many different approaches.

I trained as an integrative counsellor, learning about a range of different theories and methods. Primarily I work from the Person Centred approach, which respects the client as the expert on themselves.

I want clients to feel in control of their therapy, identifying what they want to explore and how they want to use their sessions. I aim to make the counselling space feel safe, so that you feel comfortable enough to explore any aspect of your life.

Building a trusting and empathic relationship is the first task in counselling, as research has shown that this is the single most important feature of successful therapy.  Confidentiality and being non-judgemental are the cornerstones of the therapeutic relationship.  My aim is to understand your life from your perspective, so that together we can gain insight and understanding.

Practice description

I have worked at West Mercia Rape and Sexual Assault Support Centre for 3 years, developing my skills to work with trauma, self esteem and anxiety.  In this setting I have worked with women and men of all ages, helping them to come to terms with the impact of their experiences, to overcome shame and to move forward.

I also work at Droitwich Wellbeing Hub where I support young people aged 11 to 18.   Navigating the world as a teenager in this new age of technology and social media can be difficult.  Building a trusting relationship with an adult outside of the structure of the family can help young people to recognise their own strengths.

I have come across many people with neurodiversity in my work and I am learning through training, reading and from my clients how it feels to navigate the world from their perspective.

I work by inviting clients to share their story in the safe space of therapy.

We are all shaped by our experiences, and adapt to events and circumstances to make the best of situations. If we experience trauma we may become anxious; If we were neglected we might become people pleasers or maybe we will learn not to trust people. As your counsellor I will help you to reflect on how you feel that you have been shaped by your story.

Adaptations, which were helpful once, often become outdated and hold us back from being our true selves. Distress, anxiety, depression are all signs that we have somehow stopped being the person we are really meant to be. My aim is to help clients rediscover their true selves.

My first session

It is important to me that clients have a chance to meet me before deciding to commit to counselling, so I offer an initial session for £10.

This  will give you a chance to  get a sense of who I am and decide whether you feel comfortable with me.  Choosing a counsellor that feels right is really important.

During this session we can discuss what your goals are for the counselling, and you can outline key issues that you want to address.  I will make an informal assessment of whether I feel I am suitably qualified and experienced to work with you.  If for some reason I feel I cannot support you I will help you to identify how to find a more suitable therapist.

For work with young people I invite the parent to this first session where appropriate, depending on the young person's age.

If you choose to go ahead with sessions we will then agree times and frequency.
