About me and my therapy practice
I have been with my wife 26 years and have four children aged between 15 and 31 years, a grand daughter and a dog. I do believe we exemplify the blended family so much so with a challenge and obstacle at every turn, learning every time. Life experiences has taught me to bring honesty and transparency to the counselling room with my client. Its about unpicking things together, sometimes using humour and play this aids the session so much so bringing some of those difficult issues in with ease.
I bring over 25 years of dedicated experience having worked in a residential from Management to Support. My focus has always been on providing care and guidance to young adults navigating the profound challenges of mental health difficulties, dual diagnoses, emotional and behavioural struggles, as well as learning disabilities. It has been a privilege to stand alongside them on their journey towards stability and growth. I now work for my local Counselling service providing a value approach as a play therapist working as a Outreach and Counsellor to Children and Young people in the local schools as well as at my Local service.
I've also volunteered as a Counsellor for the Child Adolescent Bereavement Counselling Service within the NHS. I've had the opportunity to offer compassionate counselling to children and adolescents coping with the profound pain of loss. Whether in schools or the children’s outpatient department at NHS, I provided a safe and understanding space where their grief could be gently supported and their voices truly heard. I am humbled to have worked for them providing counselling for 8-25 year olds giving them the time and space to express their feelings and thoughts.
My approach to therapy is around the sense and feelings of authenticity, honesty, and transparency. With genuine empathy and compassion as cornerstones for connecting with clients, I believe that meaningful change can occur within the therapeutic relationship.
Practice description
My Perspective on Person-Centred Therapy
The essence of person-centred therapy, as I see it, is supporting individuals in building self-esteem, cultivating their personal growth, and achieving emotional well-being. I strive to help others develop self-awareness and self-compassion, empowering them to face challenges with resilience and courage. Collaboratively, I work with them to identify their unique needs and aspirations, ensuring we explore the best paths forward and provide additional support when necessary.
The Core Principles I Value:
Unconditional Positive Regard
I believe it’s vital to approach every individual with openness and an absence of judgment, appreciating their unique experiences and intrinsic worth. This kind of acceptance creates a secure environment where they can express their thoughts and feelings freely and without fear.
Empathy
To me, empathy is about genuinely understanding someone’s perspective and emotions. By stepping into their shoes, I aim to help them feel truly seen and heard, fostering a connection that facilitates their journey toward self-awareness and healing.
Congruence
I value authenticity in relationships, especially in therapeutic ones. Being honest and transparent in expressing my thoughts and feelings, while remaining sensitive, allows for a space of mutual trust and respect. It encourages others to embrace their truth within the relationship.
My first session
Fee:
The cost for each 60-minute session, is £55.00, payable via BACS or in cash during the appointment. Please use your initials as the reference. Fees are reviewed annually.
Students requiring a counsellor working in person-centred modality are charged at a rate of £40.00 per session (evidence from your training provider will secure this lower rate).
Cancellation Policy:
If I am unwell or need to schedule a break in our work, I will provide as much notice as possible. If I cancel an appointment at short notice, there will be no charge, and I will reschedule it. If you do not attend a session without providing notice, the full fee will still apply.
Providing 7 days' notice allows the community centre to arrange the weekly room plan and gives us time to reschedule without charge. However, if cancellation occurs less than 48 hours before the appointment, you will generally be charged for the session. If you miss any two appointments without prior notice, it will be assumed that you no longer wish to continue, and our sessions will be brought to a close. In case of technical issues during an online session, we will seek alternative ways to contact you (e.g., a phone call). If the session cannot proceed due to technical reasons, we will reschedule it without any charge.
Counselling session times and dates will be agreed upon with you, and a 48-hour notice period is required for cancellation; otherwise, you will be charged for the session. It is advisable to keep a note of the dates and times of your agreed counselling sessions.
Missing 2 or more sessions without informing the Counsellor will result in the termination of the counselling process.
Before the first session, you need to complete an assessment sheet which I can email. I hope all of the above information is helpful.
