About me and my therapy practice

My name is Thomas Hoi-Wing Chan, and I am a psychotherapist registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (Íø±¬ÃÅ). I began my private practice in Hong Kong, where I worked from 2013 to 2023, and have continued my work in the UK since then. I currently work with individuals aged 17 and above who are facing challenges related to mental health and personal development. I offer both online and in-person sessions.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with clients from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. This diverse experience has strengthened my competence in practicing psychotherapy with a multicultural perspective.

Practice description

Over time, my focus gradually shifted toward psychodynamic psychotherapy and analytical psychology—approaches that explore unconscious processes and the integration of life experiences. I have since incorporated these perspectives into my therapeutic work.

To access the unconscious and explore the deeper meaning behind personal experiences, I integrate techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, sandplay, and expressive arts into my sessions. I believe that creative expression provides a safe and supportive space for reflection and insights.

Therapy with me is a relational and intuitive process that aims to help you make meaning of the experiences along your life journey. We will work together to create a larger picture by connecting the dots, examining associations and hidden networks, evaluating moments from your past, uncovering patterns (if any), and exploring their deeper meanings.

My first session

My first session usually starts with a brief and casual introduction of both myself and clients. We will start talking about anything you want to bring into the space – please don't worry if nothing is coming up, this is your space without a judgmental mind. Whatever you bring into space is welcome. And your subjective experiences and interpretations always matter. We will then try to figure out the underlying thoughts, emotions, reactions, and responses from your experiences. So we can make sense of your experiences and map your inner world. With this map, it is easier to find out what your next move is.

We will also talk about practical arrangements, such as time and frequency of appointments.
