About me and my therapy practice

My name is Yvonne. I’m a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental counsellor who is deeply committed to supporting the wellbeing of my clients. I believe that each person holds the capacity for healing and growth, and my role is to provide a safe, supportive space where that process can unfold. Together, we’ll explore what works best for you—finding personalised, practical tools to help you move forward with resilience and self-empowerment.

I have particular expertise in working with individuals who are recovering from high-control groups or cults, as well as those navigating spiritual abuse and religious trauma. This area is close to my heart, and I am currently pursuing a PhD focused on this subject. I also have a strong interest and experience in working with members of the d/Deaf community, families of prisoners, and adults who have received a late diagnosis of Autism.

Since opening my private practice in July 2018, I’ve supported children, individuals, and couples with a wide range of issues, including trauma, PTSD, depression, stress, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, self-harm, and more. While I now work exclusively in private practice—offering sessions online—I also bring experience from working in schools, charities, and community counselling services.

I hold British Sign Language (BSL) Level 3 and warmly welcome d/Deaf clients. My practice is inclusive, flexible, and I will always work with you to meet your needs.

Practice description

At the heart of my counselling practice is a genuine commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental space where you can explore your experiences, emotions, and challenges at your own pace. My approach is grounded in the principles of person-centred therapy which centres on the belief that each individual has the innate capacity for growth, healing, and self-understanding—given the right conditions.

While person-centred counselling is the main framework that I use, I also draw from other evidence-based modalities, including Transactional Analysis (TA), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and somatic approaches. This integrative style allows me to tailor sessions to the unique needs of each client, meeting them where they are and working together toward meaningful change.

The focus is not on fitting the client into a rigid structure, but rather on adapting therapeutic tools and perspectives to support each person as a whole—emotionally, mentally, and physically. This flexible, relational approach will help you to navigate a range of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, identity issues, relationships, and personal growth.

As well as my counselling qualifications, I have a degree and Masters in Psychology and I am currently working towards a PhD at De Montfort University in social psychology exploring the embodied experiences of individuals with religious trauma.

My first session

I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation where we can explore how I work and what you're hoping to gain from counselling. This is a relaxed, no-pressure space for us to get a sense of whether we’re a good fit to work together. Finding a counsellor you feel comfortable with is one of the most important parts of the therapeutic journey, so this session is all about supporting that connection.

During our initial meeting, I’ll invite you to share a little about what’s brought you to counselling, and I’ll explain more about my approach and how I work. We may also use a short questionnaire or inventory to get a clearer picture of your current symptoms and their impact. These tools aren’t diagnostic but can be helpful in shaping our understanding and direction.

If we decide to move forward together, we’ll begin your first full counselling session by creating a working agreement. This is a collaborative process where we’ll outline what you’d like to focus on, how long therapy might last, which approach may best suit your needs, and how we’ll review your progress along the way.

The aim is to create a clear, supportive framework for our work together—one that feels right for you. You're welcome to ask any questions at any stage, and we'll move at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
