About me and my therapy practice

I am an Integrative Therapist.  To get any jargon out of the way straight away, this means that I use lots of different skills and theories within my work to make sure that the work that we do together fits exactly what you need at this time.  This can vary so much from person to person and also at different times for individuals.

At the heart of our work together is the therapeutic relationship.  Therapy can be difficult and requires you to be vulnerable at times.  I believe that for you to achieve the change that you want in your life you need to trust the person that you are working with.  I will offer you a space where: you are heard; you are not judged; I will not try to fix things for you; you will have the time and space that you need to deeply explore what is going on for you; you decide what changes you want to make and how you would like to reach these goals.  We will work collaboratively, side by side, to work towards your goals.

Within the work that we do together, there may be times when you will choose to learn mindfulness techniques to ground you in the moment.  At other points you may want to learn techniques to challenge your unhelpful thinking patterns in the here and now as this can have a dramatic effect on how you feel and the coping strategies that you choose.  You may also decide that it is appropriate to look back at your own personal history and the relationships that you have engaged in to  explore how this may be impacting your now.

At all times, you will decide the pace of the work and you have the autonomy to continue exploring particular areas or to pause and shift focus.

I hope that this helps you understand the way in which I work but if you have any further questions then please feel free to reach our and ask.

Practice description

I work online which means that I am able to work with clients throughout the UK.  Working online can bring it's own challenges so, at the start of our work together, we would contract carefully around confidentiality and the ever present pitfalls of relying on technology.

I like to work in a creative way as I believe that when we engage with our creative side it can become easier to access our deeper thoughts and feelings.  If you are thinking at this point, 'I am no artist, this is not for me!'  you don't need to worry.  Creativity comes in very many forms and can include: imagery; looking at pictures and photographs; working with objects; word association; visualisations ... the list is quite literally as long as our imaginations allow.

Having said this, the therapy space is your space and anything that I offer is just that, an offering.  You are in control and can choose how you would like to engage in your therapy.

My first session

Our first session together will be an assessment session.  This is not as scary as it sounds.  Essentially, it is time for you to decide whether or not I am the person that you are looking for and also for me to get a feel of whether or not I can meet your needs and provide you with the therapeutic support that you need.

During this session, we will explore the ways in which you like to work and the styles of working that you find difficult.  In addition to this you will have the chance to explain why you are seeking support at this time and what you hope to get out of our work together.  This will include a risk assessment and, if necessary, we can discuss actions that can be taken around this to reduce any risk of harm to yourself or others.

During this session, you would also have a chance to ask any questions that you may have so that you can get a better sense of what our sessions might look like.

If, after this first session, you decide that this is the right fit for you then you can book your next session.  If, however, you decide that this is not the right fit or the right time, there is no obligation to book any further sessions.

About me and my therapy practice

Reaching out for support in times of need is courageous. I can offer you a calm, confidential space where you can explore your current difficulties with an empathic other without fear of being judged

Underpinning my work is my firm belief that you are the expert in you. Even though things may feel overwhelming and insurmountable at the moment, I trust that you have the resources within yourself to resolve the issues that are causing you distress.  What I can offer is a calm, confidential space where you can explore whatever is going on for you, without judgement.

I work in an integrative way combining a range of theories and skills in order to provide a counselling service tailored to your individual needs.  Our work together is collaborative; a joint process built on trust.  As such, we will work together to find methods and techniques that help you to understand your current situation in a way that makes sense to you.

Through our work together, my aim is to facilitate a space where you can begin to view what is going on for you in a more objective way so that you can find answers and solutions that feel comfortable for you.

Practice description

There are many different models of counselling which can become quite overwhelming and confusing.  It is possible that you are familiar with some ways of working or this may be your first experience of counselling and you do not know what to expect.

I am an integrative counsellor and am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (Íø±¬ÃÅ).  So, what does this mean?  It means that I am trained in a range of different therapies and I draw from each of these to make a bespoke service for you.  My core modalities are:

Person centred therapy

This is the bedrock of my work and ensures that you have a space where you are free to bring whatever you need to bring knowing that you will be received with warmth, empathic understanding and no judgement.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

The theory behind CBT is that we can have negative thinking patterns which influence our feelings and ways of responding.  By learning how to modify these patterns of thinking, we can start to respond in ways that are healthier for us.

 Transactional Analysis (TA)

The focus here is on how we relate to each other and how our ways of responding in different situations are influenced by our past relationships and how we have been received by significant people in our lives.

In addition to these ways of working, I also have a higher diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling which focusses on our early relationships and attachments and how these influence how we respond now.  These experiences often lie in the unconscious mind and it is only by bringing them into the conscious that we can begin to have the choice to change things for our own benefit.

I work with adults and young people from 14 years old.  I can support you with a range of life problems including helping you to understand how past relationships and experiences influence the way that you respond to difficulties in the present.  I have both personal and professional experience working within the LGBTQ+ community.

My first session

You have taken the most difficult step by deciding to reach out for support. I appreciate that finding the right counsellor is a very personal decision and so I offer a free 30 minute video consultation to help you decide if you feel that we can work together. If you feel you would like to arrange this, you can contact me via email so that we can arrange a time convenient to you.

During this initial call we can talk about what has brought you to counselling and explore your readiness for counselling at this time.

I am currently working both online and in person.

About me and my therapy practice

I am currently training with Counselling Tutor as an Integrative Supervisor.  I have been passed as fit to practise and am able to provide evidence of this if requested.   The modalities that form my Integrative Practice are PCA, Psychodynamic, TA and CBT.

At the heart of our work together is your clients. Supervision is an essential part of ethical practice - it provides you with another set of eyes on your client work.   I will offer you a space where: you are given the space to view your client more objectively; you can reflect on your relationship with your client and any barriers to your work; you can look at the interventions you are using with your clients and the appropriateness of these; you will be challenged so that you can enhance your practice.  We will work collaboratively, side by side, to support your client.

I hope that this helps you understand the way in which I work but if you have any further questions then please feel free to reach out and ask.

Practice description

I work both face to face and online.  Whether working online or face-to-face, at the start of our work together, we would contract carefully to ensure our work together is ethical and maintains the confidentiality of your work with your client.

Having said this, everyone has their own unique way of learning and understanding information.  I would work with you to understand your learning style so that our work together is appropriate and effective.

My first session

Prior to our first session together we would meet online to discuss your modality of working to ensure that this aligns with my experience.  This sessions would be free of charge.  I would also request proof of your qualifications, Insurance and ICO memberhip at this stage.

Our first face-to face session will be a contracting session. This will be a collaborative session where we will look through my contract together and there will be an opportunity to edit this so that it matches both your expectations and mine.

During this session, you will have the opportunity to present your current client load to me and give me an overview of the clients that you are working with.

If, after this first session, you decide that I am the right Supervisor for you then you can book your next session. If, however, you decide that we are not the right fit, there is no obligation to book any further sessions.
