About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I am Kim, and I work in the centre of Poole in Dorset. I love helping people make the most of life.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Humanistic Counselling which followed on from my diploma training at Redlands Counselling and Training.

When we hit a bump in our life talking helps. When we are able to talk freely we often find our own way through these challenges.

As a Humanistic counsellor I provide an empathic, safe and confidential space allowing you to explore your concerns without judgement.  I believe that by providing these conditions you will find your inner resources and find clarity.

I work with the day-to-day challenges we face in an every increasingly busy world such as stress, anxiety, life transitions and  loss in it's many forms.

I do not provide advice however I will walk along side you in a collaborative way that endeavours to empower you to find your path and answers, at your own pace. Insight is gained when we work closely.

Humanistic counselling works with our mind, body and soul (or spirit).  This means working in the present moment, however  you may want to gently explore parts of your life that you are not always fully aware of such as a unconscious repeating pattern of being. It helps us understand who we are, how we got there and where to next.

I weave into my practice creative techniques and basic grounding and mindfulness if you think they could be helpful.  I have an interest in existentialism .

A solution-focused approach can be helpful for those of us who are more goal driven. I can work with adult attachment issues.

I offer walk and talk therapy which allows us space to simply be in nature, the space I use if easy to find with ample parking.

I can offer therapy by text and email for those who struggle with talking regardless of reason.

Counselling helps us make sense of life especially when it seems complicated and we don't know where to start.

I work with young people over 16 years, students, including counselling student and all adults.

Practice description

Our first meeting is important and we will talk about what brings you to counselling and what your expectations are. This helps set the scene for our time together. That scene isn't fixed and people often find different themes emerging. This is normal.

Whilst some people are goal focused, some of us aren't. This is ok. For others it can be a case of feeling that something isn't quite right in life and this starting point is as valid as any other. You might even have a long list of problems to explore.

How much counselling do you need? That depends on several factors.

A lot can be achieved in a single session especially if you are focused on one particular thing such as plucking up the courage to do or say something.

Brief therapy is generally up to 24 sessions but can be significantly less, for example six sessions can help us process loss or workplace issues where exploring boundaries and self-care can be beneficial. Greater changes in our life (wanted and unwanted!) can take more sessions.

Longer term and/or open ended therapy allows you to more fully explore the nature of who you are, how did you get there and how this nature of being affects you and your life. The pace is gentle and unrushed allowing you to develop organically.

Counselling aims to help us become more authentic. It is through looking at oneself and our life that we can grow. Growth isn't always about change; sometimes acceptance can be just as healing.

The weird thing is: it is often through acceptance that change can occur.

My first session

It's helpful to get to know each other a little before we start.  That first step is the biggest one.

To help you decide if I am a good fit for you, I offer an obligation free 20 minute "hello" call / video.  I appreciate that I may not be the counsellor for you and that is perfectly ok.

If you think a full 50 minute initial conversation may be more beneficial.  I charge £25.00, this is obligation free (concessions available).

Our first formal session will include an assessment and this can be really helpful in setting the scene for what happens next in your therapeutic journey.  This is not set in stone and people sometimes find what brings them to counselling may be different to what they work through. This is quite normal.

Single Session Therapy is available and can help those who really just need to talk their issue through and find a solution.
