About me and my therapy practice

I specialise in working with couples and individuals in the context of their relationships, whether historical or present, intimate or otherwise, to help gain an understanding of the conflicts and difficulties we all face at times in them. These, along with any related innermost fears – whether poor communication, escalating arguments, unresolvable difference, addiction, eating disorders, mental health issues, divorce and separation amongst others – can be explored with me in an open minded, safe and confidential surrounding. I aim to create an environment where effective communication and deeper understanding of the situation is allowed to develop at a pace comfortable with the client.

I trained at Tavistock Relationships, the internationally renowned centre for post graduate training, research, practise and policy for couples and family based in London, where I continue to teach and supervise. I am also qualified in mentalisation based therapy (MBT) which means I can work safely and thoughtfully with highly conflicted couples with good outcomes. Previously I worked with a charity offering therapy for couples facing the impact of rare genetic (and often life limiting) conditions within the family and continue to work in private practice with both couples and individuals where these conditions are present.

Formerly in the aviation industry, my interest in psychology arose from the observation of teams in high pressure situations. I have deep and continuing interest in the balance between the rational mind and the more complex emotional being, particularly in couple relationships and by extension, within families themselves.

My first session

Prior to meeting for the first time, I do ask individual clients to fill in a questionnaire to get a sense of where they are in themselves at the time therapy is first considered. Not everyone likes doing this, so it is not essential, but does allow space for a bit of reflection. With those considering couple therapy, there are further questions to get a sense of how each partner experiences the relationship at that moment in time. Again, whilst not essential, it can provide a useful reflection point.

In the first few sessions, I would aim to gain some understanding of what you think brings you to therapy, what expectations you have and how we might best work together. From there, it becomes your space to bring what you would like to think about and, in this, we will work together to make sense of them such that that life feels more manageable.
