About me and my therapy practice

I work with a variety of clients, including those with ADHD and/or autistic. I am trauma informed and neuro-affirming in my practice, and have specific lived and professional experience, training and interest in supporting autistic people and those with ADHD (including AuDHD) navigating the overwhelmingly neurotypical world around us.

I am trained as a humanistic and integrative counsellor. The "humanistic" part means I listen empathically and without judgement, bringing genuine warmth and compassion to our relationship. I work in a person-centred way, which means that I will support you in exploring what you feel comfortable sharing, looking at what you need to help you feel safe and grounded.

The "integrative" part means I am trained in a variety of approaches I can integrate into our sessions according to your needs and what feels right and safe to you. This might include "psychodynamic" - looking at the link between your childhood development and how this has influenced you as an adult, perhaps looking at the links between your current patterns of relating and your past experience. As I am "trauma informed", if you feel very unsafe looking at the past, we can focus instead on your present experience, perhaps integrating mindfulness techniques to help you feel more grounded.

We might also look at ways you might be able to introduce more self-care into your life, and exploring any obstacles to this. This would include identifying and understanding your specific needs and how to meet them, exploring ways to self-regulate, manage overwhelm and work through life’s obstacles. This could include learning to understand your sensory needs, and building an understanding of the unique ways in which you communicate and process experiences and emotions.

Practice description

The most important part of my work with you is helping you feel safe, heard and validated in sessions with me, and I can offer you genuine kindness, warmth and compassion in supporting you to build self understanding, acceptance, and coping skills.

I am very much here to listen to and empathise with you, and help you build self compassion and understanding and how to better meet your needs. Together we may explore your current and past experiences, seeing how they impact your life, your relationships, and your inner thoughts and processes. helping you find ways forward and coping strategies.

If you feel more comfortable being occupied with something such as drawing or colouring whilst talking, we can do this, I also have a variety of stimming aids available. We can talk about ways of grounding other than just breathing, for example.

I see clients on a weekly basis, sessions last 50 minutes.

My first session

I offer an initial 15 minute introductory call (or email exchange if you aren't comfortable talking on the phone), for free - please contact me lucywestoncounselling@gmail.com to arrange.  This call might help you decide whether you'd like to arrange an initial 50 minute assessment session with me, charged at usual session rate (£55), or you can email me to arrange this too without initial call. The assessment session will be a chance for us to meet, me to ask you some questions, you share what brings you for counselling, and give you an idea of what sessions might be like with me. There would be no obligation after this to continue with weekly sessions, but if you do decide you would like this we can arrange this.
