About me and my therapy practice

Hello. I am an experienced Íø±¬ÃÅ accredited counsellor based in Heworth, York, YO31.

I work with 1:1 with young adults (18-40s), university students, LGBTQ+ people and people with autism.

I offer compassionate, respectful support in a welcoming setting. My aim is to provide you with a non-judgmental space where you can talk about anything that is of concern to you, at your pace.

I will support you to better understand yourself and explore ways to manage difficult thoughts and feelings. We can also work on any changes you would like to make in the way you approach your life relationships, work and study.

People have counselling with me for many reasons including:

  • Feeling anxious, depressed or overwhelmed. Experiencing panic attacks. Wanting to better understand and manage these feelings.
  • Support with past and current difficult experiences such as bullying, relationship breakdown, loss, illness and family problems.
  • Dealing with life transitions including starting and finishing university, leaving home, work, study and career changes.

Am I the right counsellor for you?

Finding a therapist that you feel comfortable working with is the key to successful therapy.

I offer a complimentary, 15 minute Zoom or phone conversation to help you to decide whether you would like to start counselling with me.

Practice description

The counselling I offer

I am a Person-Centred counsellor.  My approach is rooted in empathy, genuineness, and a respect for your autonomy and individual experience.

My role is to carefully listen to you, understand you and communicate this understanding back to you. Being offered a clear reflection of ourselves can be enormously beneficial. It can help us to see who we are, how we think and feel and how our experiences have shaped us. When we have a clearer understanding of this, we can to start consider any changes we may want to make.

University student clients

I am experienced at counselling all kinds of students from undergraduate to PhD - whether you are currently studying or taking a break from your degree. I work with a range of student specific concerns including academic stress, procrastination, perfectionism, imposter syndrome and estrangement.

  • Student/recent graduate fee: £45 for 50 minutes.
  • Vacation breaks and flexibility from week to week if your study or employment timetable changes.
  • A comfortable counselling room away from the university campus.

LGBTQ+ clients

I work with many LGBTQ+ clients who want to use sessions to explore their sexuality or gender identity. I also work with LGBTQ+ clients who would like to have a counsellor who is part of the LGBTQ+ community; I am gay/lesbian.

Practicalities

I offer weekly, fortnightly or as and when counselling. It is your choice how many sessions you have and how frequently you would like to meet.

Where will I have my counselling?

My welcoming practice is based in my home in Heworth, a quiet suburb in York, YO31.

I am well located for York city centre, University of York and York St John University campuses and for the main York City postcode areas: YO1, YO10, YO19, YO23 YO24, YO26, YO30, YO32.

There is plenty of free parking in the street and the number 9, 11 and Coastliner buses stop near by.

My first session

I am interested in counselling with you - what is the next step?

Please use the contact form to let me know a bit about yourself and your availability on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

After you contact me

I will reply within 24 hours and let you know the sessions I have available.  I also will send you some further information about my counselling practice and offer you an optional free 15 minute Zoom or phone conversation.

Optional initial Zoom or phone conversation

This is for you to get a feel for what it is like to talk with me. Please feel free to ask any questions you have.  If we both want to go ahead, we can arrange a first session date.

Your first session

I will ask you about what has brought you to counselling and how you would like to use your sessions.

If you are not sure about what it would be helpful for you to focus on in counselling we can start to explore this together.

What can I talk about in counselling?

You can talk about whatever you want to, no topic is off limits.

Most people come to counselling because something feels wrong or is a concern. This might be your relationships with others, recent or past life events, your job or studies. Or you may not know what is wrong, but you know your feelings of anxiety or depression mean something isn't right. We can start whereever you are.
