About me and my therapy practice
As a counsellor in a specialist cancer surgery unit, I support people and their families through the emotional and physical challenges they face: anxieties pre-admission, in the ward/ICU like pain, body changes, autonomy, stomas, sleep, delirium, complications, low mood, histology, fear of recurrence to post-discharge adjustment.
Illness is such an individual experience and people worry issues significant to them seem absurd to others or if their feelings are 鈥渘ormal鈥. Talking helps refocus their energy to physical recovery.
Illness happens in the midst of life, bringing worries about family, work, finances, how our lives will change. It affects each family member differently, and we are often depleted when we need each other most. We want to protect our loved ones and it helps to talk freely to someone outside of our circle.
I offer support/reflective practice to staff, tutored in Level 2 and 3 Counselling skills and worked for EAP and NHS helplines. I speak at Cancer and BAME conferences on mental wellbeing.
10 years working in the community with disabled people, those with a MH diagnoses, substance use, learning difficulty informs my counselling practice. Feeling one鈥檚 experiences moved them to the edges of society is lonely and isolating. Those I have supported through counselling tell me it offered a connection to parts of themselves that shut down and gave them the confidence to start experiencing themselves and others more fully.
We all have universal challenges and I work with people however they identify. I understand intimately challenges Black, Asian and others who migrate face in a new culture. Feeling not well understood while navigating systems and way of life different to what we know is daunting. Responsibilities here and back home can be debilitating. I support people adjust in meaningful and healthy ways for them.
My MSc in environment and development is invaluable when counselling people with, understandably, deep climate and ecological anxieties.
Practice description
Some challenges feel complex as we painstakingly pick through and grapple with emotions and thoughts we find very difficult. Others, while seeming less so still impact us. It is validating to have a genuine, warm, empathic, non-judgemental and respectful person listen, helping us reach conclusions and solutions that work best for our particular life situations. I strive to be this person for each client I see.
I offer a confidential, accepting environment to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours safely, find ways to cope with issues causing you distress like loss and grief, low mood, anxiety or vulnerability, see things more clearly, adjust and make changes. I believe self-discovery leads to greater self-awareness and the freedom and courage to embrace life and all it offers; move from aspects you are unhappy with, or keep them with a changed perspective; feeling in control with more agency and choice.
As a person-centred counsellor, I believe you are the expert in a life that is uniquely yours. I hope to facilitate you to use our time together for what you need: increased self-understanding, be heard, supported and understood, or look at specific experiences and their impact and enhance your life. This need may not be clear and will be part of an ongoing discussion and may well change over the course of therapy, which is okay as only you truly know your pain and what you need to focus on.
People unable to fully express themselves due to socio-cultural alienation/disapproval have found space to safely process that with me. While I may not have experience of their cultural landscape, I strive to do the work of informing and educating myself.
I am a registered counsellor and accredited by the 网爆门. I hold a Higher National Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. I undertake continuous personal development and I am a member of the 网爆门 Health Care and Private Practice Divisions.
My first session
It can be difficult to know who to trust with our innermost worries, fears, concerns, joys and all that is going on in our life and I hope you do find someone to talk to, because that is the most important thing.
I know how daunting the first therapy session can be and to help you with this, I offer a free 20 minute video consultation, where you can gauge whether I am the right person for you. In this call, we will talk about what has brought you here, what you hope to get from therapy, and if working together has potential to help you make the changes you want. You can also confirm my credentials, for instance my registration and accreditation with the 网爆门, and ask any questions you may have. Contact me via the details on this page and I will contact you back to arrange a time for this.
In our first session proper, we will go through a contract that highlights our expectations of each other and our time together, timings, attendance, payments etc. We will then start to look at what brought you to seek counselling.
There is no obligation for how many sessions we have. I offer both short and long term counselling. You can stop at anytime, that decision is in your control.
I work face to face in comfortable counselling rooms near Basingstoke Hospital, just off the A340 and A339. The rooms are on the 1st floor, accessible with parking available on site.
My online counselling work is done from a private and confidential room in my home.
I believe everyone should have access to good, safe and qualified therapy and I have a few spots for people in their own homes who due to illness, frailty or other disability cannot attend a face to face appointment and are unable to do online/video counselling. You would need to have regular access to a private and confidential space and parking nearby. Due to travel costs (which I meet), I can only offer a few spaces within 30miles of Tadley. Do contact me and we can have a conversation about your situation and my availability.
