Availability

My working hours are Monday - Friday. I offer daytime and evening sessions until 7pm, outdoor work is of course dependant on light and weather. I check my emails daily.

I usually suggest to begin with weekly sessions, and with longer term work you may choose to move to fortnightly or monthly.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified, Íø±¬ÃÅ registered integrative counsellor, which means that I combine therapeutic interventions to best help you. I draw on person-centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and transactional analysis, among other theoretical approaches that I have studied.

I have worked with adults of all ages and backgrounds, using a client-led approach to define goals for therapy and form a collaborative plan, drawing on a varied toolkit, to achieve them. You may be seeking greater self-awareness, balanced mood, better sleep, less anxiety, acceptance of big feelings, improved relationships or strategies with addictions/habits that feel beyond your control.

My practice name is "Just Be" because in this ever speeding up world, I am curious about what happens when we stop, slow down and take a deep non-judging look at ourselves. I believe this offers the opportunity to connect more fully with our world, inner and outer, and can bring change in our relationship to others.

Practice description

I sometimes practice from my motorhome, in which I have set up a secure and stable internet connection and safe and private space to safeguard client confidentiality.

I am currently working online, on the phone and in an outdoor setting at a local nature reserve in the North Essex / Cambridgeshire area. Please do get in contact to find out more about Outdoor Therapy, I can be flexible on location within reason.

I offer concessionary rates to anyone who needs them, do ask me about this if finances are an obstacle to seeking support.

My first session

I offer a free phone consultation for you to hear more about me and my practice, and also for me to learn more about what you are looking for. The first session after this is an assessment in which I will ask more questions about what brings you to therapy, to help define your goals and give me an idea of how you might prefer to work. After 6 sessions I usually review the process with you to find out what is working well and re-evaluate your goals. There is no set limit to the number of sessions you can have.

Availability

I work daytime and evenings between 9am and 6pm. I currently have availability on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Thursday evenings.

I continue to work outdoors in all seasons. I am taking some time off over Christmas between 25th-29th December.

About me and my therapy practice

I work outdoors in an integrative way, bringing different counselling theories to my work as appropriate to my client's needs. Some times I will incorporate cognitive behavioural therapy if managing thoughts, feelings and behaviours is important, or person centred theory if the client needs an accepting empathic space to explore their needs, or a psychodynamic approach if patterns from childhood are impacting on the present. I have a particular interest in the inner voice and the inner "family" that supports and sometimes hinders us, having recently done some training in Internal Family Systems. I have trained in working outdoors with one of the foremost practitioners in the field of ecotherapy - working beyond ourselves as individuals and towards being connected to our environment and our world on the journey to feeling more whole.

Practice description

Outdoor therapy does involve walking and talking, but also we can use the natural environment to explore in creative ways. Being outdoors brings information from the senses and the body as well as the mind, and paying attention to these messages can be important. Having an open green space to work in brings another dimension to counselling. It allows you to breathe deeply, to spread out and move around, and get in touch with your inner world.

The nature reserve is small and quiet, with varied habitats from woodland to thorn scrub and pastures with grazing sheep. There are several ponds and a small stream running through.

I am also happy to travel closer to where you are based provided it is a reasonable distance and there is a suitable park or green area we can use. I am happy to work in all seasons and most weathers. You will need to ensure that you have appropriate clothing and gear for being outdoors for 50 minutes.

My first session

I offer a free initial phone or video consultation for you to ask me questions and tell me more about what brings you to counselling. Should you decide that you want to work with me, I usually begin with an assessment session online or by phone as way of introduction, and also to explore what you most need from counselling. The next step is to meet for an outdoor session.

I would usually suggest doing 6 sessions and then reviewing the process, usually 6-12 weekly sessions is most beneficial, but I can work around your needs. Some people prefer to work fortnightly, or even twice weekly. A regular pattern is helpful to build momentum, allow some time in between sessions to notice what is coming up for you and to ensure not too much time elapses that the work is forgotten.

In the event that we are unable to work outdoors, I will offer a video or phone session instead, or there is always the option to reschedule.

Availability

I currently have availability for one to one sessions outdoors on Thursdays between 10.30am and 2.30pm. I have availability on other days and in the evening working online, please get in contact to find out more.

About me and my therapy practice

I became a counsellor because I am a curious and compassionate individual who loves to connect, and I believe we all carry within us a unique self that is deeply true, authentic and good. So many of us lose that connection as we navigate the noise of a world that is continuously speeding up. It isn't easy to make space to notice and process the hurts we pick up along the way, let alone the hurts that are passed down to us.

I will help you to still the noise, notice your needs, and re-connect with your deepest and truest self beneath the roles, masks and parts you play in everyday life. Along the way we may uncover and examine, at a safe and gentle pace, deeper hurts and feelings which need to be validated and healed through connection to self.

As an integrative practitioner I am trained in Person-centred, Cognitive Behavioural and Transactional Analysis theory and practice. In my ongoing professional development I am informed by parts work, trauma informed practice and poly-vagal theory. In practice this means that my aim is to get to know you and your story and integrate different approaches and tools to best help you find healing and wholeness.

Some examples of what I typically help clients with include: increasing self-awareness and building self-worth, managing low mood and depression, building healthier relationships and setting boundaries, overcoming anxiety, addictions and self-defeating behaviours. For personal reasons, I am not currently taking on bereavement work.

Practice description

I work with young adults (18+), adults and older people in my online private practice and also outdoors in a variety of green and blue spaces: beach, estuary, river, woodland and the South Downs.

I trained in working therapeutically outdoors with The Centre for Natural Reflection, which was transformational for me both personally and professionally.

Outdoor Therapy is more than walk and talk, although this can be hugely beneficial as walking stimulates both sides of the brain, helping us to process and integrate thoughts and feelings. Studies show that being in nature lowers our stress response and helps us to regulate our emotions. Several other dimensions can enhance the therapeutic process: how we experience our body, senses, mind and self, as part of and in response to the natural environment. All the parts of our experience come alive and join with the "more than human" to bring insight, integration and healing.

People often know which natural spaces are most helpful to them, and sometimes different ones are helpful in different seasons.

If you are interested in outdoor therapy please get in contact with me for a free 15 minute phone consultation.

My first session

Should you decide to work with me, I will send you my counselling agreement to read through and sign, and we can then proceed to an assessment session.

The assessment session is held online, as a chance to meet virtually so we can recognise each other when meeting outdoors. This format also enables me to do a thorough assessment of what you are looking for and what you need before we get in to the work itself. I will ask you  questions about your history and what has brought you to this place and give you a chance to ask questions of me.

My usual style of counselling is more client-led. I do not take detailed notes in the sessions, I may write down one or two words that stand out to me for my own reflective practice and supervision. All information is held in line with GDPR and I am registered with the ICO.
