About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Jo. I specialise in working with people whose fear of death is getting in the way of them living life in the way they want to.
One of the tricky things about fear of death is that it鈥檚 normal 鈥 everyone feels it, to some extent. Most people can set it aside and get on with their life. But for some, fear of death has a daily impact: it can take over, showing up as panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, dread of illness, or a constant sense of time running out.
I help people process these fears with EMDR so they no longer dominate everyday life. Clients often tell me they go from daily panic attacks and intrusive thoughts to living more freely 鈥 fear is no longer in the driving seat.
Why you might be here
If you鈥檙e living with fear of death 鈥 technically known as thanatophobia 鈥 you might be experiencing some of these things:
- Spikes of dread, perhaps multiple times a day, when you think of you or others dying.
- Feeling triggered by things related to death 鈥 casualty, funerals, symptoms of illness in yourself or others.
- Panic attacks at the thought of you or others dying.
- A constant sense of time running out.
- Intrusive thoughts even when you鈥檙e having a good time 鈥 often along the lines of 鈥渨e鈥檒l all be dead one day.鈥
- Nighttime anxiety or difficulty falling asleep.
- Intrusive images or 鈥渨hat if鈥 thoughts that won鈥檛 switch off.
- Terror of not knowing what happens after we die.
You might feel like fear of death is ruining your life.
If any of this chimes with you, you鈥檙e in the right place.
Practice description
I use EMDR therapy to reduce fear of death. EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. It works on the root of the fear, so you no longer feel triggered or stuck in the same reactions. Fear of death is one of my favourite things to work on, because reducing it has such a measurable impact on people鈥檚 lives 鈥 and because EMDR is so effective.
Fear of death often links back to moments that got 鈥渟tuck鈥 鈥 a health scare, losing someone close, or even the first time you realised death was inevitable. These memories stay raw, and your nervous system keeps reacting as if the danger is happening right now.
Here鈥檚 what happens in EMDR:
- We identify the key memories, triggers, or beliefs fuelling the fear.
- We use bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds) to help your brain reprocess them.
- The panic, images, and intrusive thoughts then lose their grip.
People who鈥檝e done this work with me often describe feeling freer. Panic attacks that once came five times a day stop altogether, or shrink to the odd passing thought that no longer derails them. Death may still cross their mind, but it is no longer in the driving seat.
All my EMDR sessions are online. I鈥檝e found that EMDR works brilliantly this way, and it enables me to work with people in any location.
My first session
There are two main factors that predict success: you, and your relationship with your therapist. I offer a free 15-minute introductory call so that we can explore whether we would be a good fit.
If we decide to work together, we would usually have some sessions understanding the lay of the land: what is going on for you, and what you would like to change. Usually after 2-4 sessions, we will start EMDR.
