About me and my therapy practice

Hi I'm Ann, I help people feel relaxed and comfortable when they come to counselling. I appreciate that it can be a big step for some people, especially if they haven't experienced counselling before.

People are often pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and relaxing it can be sharing thoughts and emotions with a total stranger.

I work in an empathic, caring way to help people feel comfortable in a confidential safe space.

Trust and confidentiality are important in a client/therapist relationship.

I practice in a Person Centred way. This is a talking therapy. I also use a number of other approaches depending on your needs.

I work in short term therapy, long term therapy, and also, as and when needed.

Some individuals find it useful to know that they can return in the future for a single session every now and again if need be.

I specialise in all types of Anxiety

Under the umbrella of anxiety can be a wide range of issues on various levels.

Sometimes people don't know why they have anxiety.

When we are able to find the root cause of the anxiety, this is when the therapy begins.

This is usually the start of the healing process that enables people to see that they have got options, and choice.

Then going forward, finding ways of coping with the physical symptoms as well as the negative thoughts, by using a method called (CBT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This focuses on a persons thoughts, emotions and actions.

This helps to break the negative cycle people often get stuck in.

Becoming aware that change is possible with hard work and effort can be liberating.

We work at your pace!

I also specialise in Grief and Loss

There are many types of grief. Sometimes people feel unable to move on, they feel "stuck" and unable to process the extremely difficult emotions.

Sometimes loss is difficult to accept for many reasons for example, suicide; complicated circumstances; difficult relationships; COVID period; delayed grief.

We work together to find positives ways forward at your pace.

Practice description

I practice face-to-face counselling sessions in the Spetchells in Prudhoe which is a community hub in the front street.

The office I use in the Spetchells is on the 1st floor accessible by 2 short flights of stairs. There is also a public lift for disabled access.

There are a number of places for parking at the rear of the building.

My first session

There would be an arranged initial 20-30 free minute phone consultation. This gives people the time to talk over the issues they would be bringing to therapy.

Then we would decide whether we would like to work together.  It is important that we both feel comfortable with each other.

If we were both happy to go ahead with therapy, then we would arrange the time and date for the first session suitable to both parties regarding availability. This could be face-to-face, by phone call, phone video call or online sessions.

The first session would be around explaining the counselling agreement, which is basically information on what the process entails; how long the sessions will be; what the expectations are from you; generally guidelines on what to expect etc... It is not legally binding. It is informed information regarding the counselling process.

This would be signed and dated by both parties, then we would start the first session.

We work with the issues you bring to the session. I won't give you advice, I may make suggestions, the most important is that you find your own answers. This can feel very empowering. It helps people to feel have they have control in their lives.

If someone needs long term therapy I am able to offer block sessions at a reduced rate.

There are other options for example; attending a therapy session every fortnight.
