About me and my therapy practice
I am a warm, supportive and empathic counsellor with a lot of experience to offer. I bring age, wisdom and a gentle presence to my work.
I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I work with more than one theoretical model and I can be flexible, using the ideas and techniques that will be most helpful for each individual. I might also ask you to draw or write something if it seems appropriate, as I believe creativity can give us new ways in to seeing things.
I listen carefully to my clients, and will respond to whatever you tell me in a non-judgmental way.
Through talking and building trust, we will create a safe space in which you can look at how your past and present experiences have shaped your life. Through a process of reflection and enquiry, we can work together to develop insight and understanding.
This could help you to ease distress, work through difficult feelings, make major decisions or life choices, improve low self-esteem or lead to a greater sense of personal ease and empowerment.
I have a humanistic perspective which is rooted in my personal and spiritual beliefs, and I have a deep and compassionate concern for the well-being of each of us as human beings.
Counselling takes place in a safe, private space and always in accordance with the guidance on good practice as laid out in the Íø±¬ÃÅ Ethical Framework.
You are welcome to telephone me for an informal chat, or to come for a free initial thirty minute session, to find out more about whether I am going to be the right counsellor to help you at this time.
Practice description
I have worked in mental health for over thirty years, with much of my experience being in therapeutic communities. Alongside this work I have done training courses in counselling, group work and art therapy.
I have counselled people with mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression, addiction, traumatic experiences and PTSD. I have also run art-based groups, women's groups and stress management courses.
I have a particular interest in relationships, in sexual and emotional abuse, domestic violence and coercive control.
I am experienced in working with family dynamics and conflicts, and in issues arising from the adoption process.
I have recently completed the Certificate in Adoption Support Counselling at the Albany Centre, in conjunction with Barnardo's.
My first session
We would spend time in the first session getting to know each other and identifying the main focus of the counselling work that you want to do. We would make an agreement as to how many sessions you might want to come for and when we might review this.
