About me and my therapy practice

My counselling training focussed primarily on Person-Centred counselling, a modality which views the client as the expert in their own life and helps them develop the potential in themselves to understand their problems and work towards the changes they wish to make in their lives. This training also incorporated modules of other counselling approaches, and developed the theory and skills of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Solution-focussed therapy. Since qualifying as a counsellor I undertook further training to qualify as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.

I have a background of working for over 30 years in social work and probation practice where I trained extensively in the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing MI) and the Good Life model to help people address their problems and bring about change. In my counselling practice I initially use the Person-Centred model and often progress with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy if it's appropriate to the clients needs and they wish to engage with this therapy. However, I believe in taking an eclectic approach to counselling and I will work creatively using a variety of techniques,  with the clients agreement, and if appropriate and beneficial to meet the needs of the people I work with.

Practice description

While working in Social Work and Probation, and later as a counsellor,  I have considerable experience of working  with adolescents and adults who have suffered traumatic life events. Since I qualified as a counsellor I have worked extensively with a charity which supports and helps those who have experienced traumatic sexual abuse, as a child or adult, and/or domestic violence. I have trained specifically with this charity for working in this specialised area of work.

The effects of trauma often result in mental health difficulties, including depression, anxiety and pervading low self-esteem. These can impact severely in everyday life and are often the issues which bring clients to seek counselling. There is a lot of evidence from research studies and practice within the NHS, and endorsed by NICE,  which indicate these are problems that respond well to CBT. This is also evident from my own experience of working with mental health problems, which is my motivation for using this approach when appropriate. I also like this collaborative way of working with clients who are fully engaged in their own progress.

I also worked for several years as a volunteer with a charity which supports those who have suffered bereavement. This is another area of work I specifically trained in and it's always rewarding to help people through this difficult time in their life.
