About me and my therapy practice
Individuals
I provide a space where together we can explore the difficulties you are facing & understand why you feel the way you do & what lies behind the problems you are experiencing. The aim is to help you find ways of dealing with issues; providing an opportunity for you to work towards living in a more satisfying way where you feel more able to cope with life’s challenges.
Life can often be confusing, distressing & at times overwhelming, creating anxiety, anger & unhappiness. You may be feeling stuck or as if problems are insurmountable. There are times in all our lives when we experience distressing events or feelings & life has become painful even intolerable. At these times a therapy may be a helpful option.
I understand the thought of meeting with a therapist can be daunting but many of us feel a need for additional support at some point in our lives & can help you to understand yourself better & enable you to feel more able to make confident decisive choices.
Couples
I offer a calm space where both can feel heard & supported. My approach is warm, empathic & balanced. I work collaboratively with you to better understand each other & navigate challenges that arise in relationships.
Most relationships go through periods of strain. Sometimes we find our way through challenges alone but there are times when extra support can make all the difference. Whether you're facing difficulties with communication, trust, emotional closeness, I offer a place to explore concerns safely & constructively.
Together, we can work to uncover unhelpful patterns, build healthier ways of relating, & find more meaningful, respectful ways to connect. I will support you in learning to express your needs, listen to your partner’s needs, & move towards deeper mutual understanding. Our work may include reflecting on personal issues that are impacting the relationship eg anxiety or unresolved emotional pain.
Practice description
Individuals
Within the privacy of the sessions, it’s possible to identify patterns of behaviour we keep repeating, causing difficulties in our lives. As we become aware of unhelpful destructive patterns, & address the feelings they stir up, we can begin to see a shift in perspective. With this clarity & understanding we see more choices about what to do next & develop the confidence to manage life more effectively & make lasting changes. My role is to support you to gain insight into your past & how it has a significant influence your life today. Thoughts & feelings can be aired in a non-judgmental setting. This allows unconscious thoughts, feelings and memories to surface & be worked through. This process leads us to a deeper understanding of our feelings, thoughts, & behaviour & how we relate to others. Self-awareness & self-acceptance foster improved & expanded life choices, thereby improving emotional well being & functioning in life. I will support you to understand yourself & to find the life-path & choices that work best for you.
Couples
The goal is to create stronger, more resilient relationships built on clearer communication, emotional awareness, shared insight & new ways of relating.
I tailor each session to meet your unique needs, working collaboratively & compassionately. The focus might include:
Improving communication Learning to talk & listen in more open, constructive ways
Resolving conflict Working through disagreements with more understanding & less reactivity
Rebuilding connection Strengthening emotional intimacy & trust
Recognising patterns Identifying & changing unhelpful ways of interacting
Enhancing problem solving skills Tackling issues together as a team
Setting shared goals Creating a shared vision for your relationship going forward
Whatever you're facing, I offer a safe space to explore, reflect, & move towards a more connected and fulfilling partnership.
My first session
In order to book a first appointment, I ask that we first have a brief chat over the phone, so that you can say a little about what has led you to seek therapy at this point & also to cover a couple of administrative issues & arrange a convenient time to meet.
In the first appointment, you will have the opportunity to talk about yourself & what has brought you to counselling. I will also ask you some specific questions about yourself, such as information about your general health & well-being, & background information about you. This will help me to understand you in the context of your life. The purpose of this first session is for us to begin to get to know each other & to assess whether we believe we can work together in a way that will be useful to you. During this session, we will try to get a sense of the problem & jointly explore a possible way forward. It’s also an opportunity for us to consider what you may wish to achieve from counselling & to ask me any further questions you may have. If we decide to work together, we will arrange a time and day to meet.
I am a psychodynamically trained practitioner. Psychodynamic therapy is a therapeutic process, which helps us understand & resolve problems by increasing awareness of our inner world & its influence over relationships both past & present. It differs from most other therapies in aiming for deep-seated change in personality & emotional development.
