About me and my therapy practice
I’m committed to supporting individuals, couples and relationships through life’s challenges.
With a background in mental health, youth and community work since 2001 I bring a depth of experience to my practice. Recently I was the counsellor for 9 years at a community project near Plymouth. Over this time, I have also been working in private practice, where individuals and couples feel supported to express themselves, explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions, and develop a deeper understanding of who they are.
You may be seeking therapy for many reasons, often when emotional or psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma or difficulties in relationships begin to affect your daily life and wellbeing. You might be navigating significant changes like separation, ageing, career shifts, new medical diagnoses or life circumstances that impact your relationships. These experiences can bring uncertainty and stress, sometimes leading to unhelpful coping strategies.
Often people ask if I have a specialist area or interest. Over the years I have supported clients with a wide range of issues including those listed below. I have worked with individuals and couples who are exploring or have received a diagnosis of neurodivergence such as ADHD or autism, either through self or professional diagnosis. Sessions help clients navigate the personal and relational impact of neurodivergence, supporting greater self understanding and stronger communication and connections with others.
I have a particular interest in supporting parents of children who are disabled, differently abled or whose needs differ. Parenting in these circumstances can bring immense love and strength, but also unique challenges such as navigating systems of care, managing emotional and physical demands, or processing feelings of isolation, guilt or grief. Parents can speak openly and without judgment about their experiences, explore the impact on their relationships and daily life.
Practice description
I aim to make my practice accessible and welcoming to all. If you have a visible or invisible condition or impairment that you would like me to be aware of, please feel free to let me know. You're also welcome to suggest any adjustments that would help you feel more at ease during our sessions.
There is plenty of parking, a bathroom on the ground floor, and a space where you can wait before your session. If climbing stairs is not possible, I can offer sessions in an alternative ground floor room.
Neurodivergent clients are warmly welcomed. If there are specific needs: sensory, communication related or environmental that would help you feel more comfortable, please do let me know.
My practice room is spacious and light, with calming views of the sky, trees and a nearby field. There's a large and very comfortable sofa for you and I sit opposite on a chair.
If our sessions are online or by telephone, I’ll be seated at my desk in the same quiet room, ensuring consistency and focus for our work together.
I have experience in working with issues around gender and sexuality, relationship diversity including polyamory and non monogamy. I aim to provide a practice that is welcoming for LGBTQ plus clients and clients from all backgrounds. I have awareness of social systems that discriminate because of mental health conditions, physical health conditions, class, race, religion, beliefs, ability, gender and sexuality.
Many clients find that it useful to explore the roots of their life challenges, including family history and childhood experiences, to better understand how they have impacted on the present.
I reflect on my practice and aim to bring awareness to myself of any unconscious bias that I have. I value professionalism and take confidentiality very seriously. I regularly undertake training and CPD.
I have had a number of years of personal therapy and have practice supervision twice a month.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin exploring what brings you to therapy. You may wish to talk about your current challenges, life circumstances, what you hope to gain from therapy, or simply share whatever feels most important in that moment. I can send you some examples of initial questions before the session if you would find that helpful. Feeling anxious, unsettled or daunted about our work together is usual and so is a feeling of relief that you are making a start or continuing on your journey of understanding yourself more.
From this first session and throughout our work together, we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you. I’ll regularly check in to make sure the process feels comfortable and supportive.
Only the other day I had a light bulb moment just in a passing conversation with someone on the subject of parents. It reminded me that the more we talk with others the more we understand life and ourselves.
