About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor, couples therapist and clinical supervisor, and have worked in Barnsbury Therapy Rooms since 2012. I’m warm, thoughtful, calm and curious, most importantly offering you space and safety to talk.

I work with individual clients and couples, and will welcome you whatever your gender identification, ethnicity, sexuality, faith or cultural background. You are also welcome if you feel unsure about whether your challenges are significant enough to go to therapy at all, or are criticising yourself for not having resolved things on your own.

My approach to therapeutic work is humanistic, relational and mindfulness-based. I do not use a couch, make diagnoses (or make assumptions if you already have one), and I won’t judge you or tell you what to do.

If we agree to continue with regular sessions after our initial meeting, we will listen to what feels painful or overwhelming, and attend to it. We will explore how you meet difficulties in your life and in relationships, look at whether other responses might feel more helpful. Sometimes we will look at past events, patterns and relationships to understand the present. As our work continues you may begin to draw upon your own resources, and have different dialogues with others. A sense of well-being can become more readily accessible for you, alone or in relationships.

Practice description

Depending on what has brought you as an individual or in a couple, we may agree to work for a shorter or longer initial period. In addition to talking and where I think it helpful, I may offer to incorporate mindfulness or other experiential practices into our work, but I will not insist. All of my therapeutic work arises out of a collaborative and equal relationship between myself and clients.I have had 35 years of experience of working with clients who are experiencing difficulty and distress in their lives. I have worked with clients in bereavement agencies, in University Counselling services and in a longer-term NHS psychotherapy service. I have supervised the work of counsellors at an agency, and continue to supervise in private practice. I have taught mindfulness meditation classes to the general public, and training workshops for other counsellors.

I lived in several places and countries, before settling in North London. I am a mother. Before embarking upon therapy work I had a long career as a barrister in private practice, specialising in criminal defence, human rights and mental health law. My decision to re-train was inspired by my own very positive experience of being a client in long-term therapy.

My first session

If I have space coming up at a time that would suit you in principe, I will offer you an initial 50 minute meeting .  I do this with all prospective individual clients and couples, to give us time to explore what is bringing you now, your hopes from therapy, and for you to get a sense of me and how I work.  I’ll be happy to answer questions about how we might work together once I have a clear sense of what you are bringing.  If I think I may be a suitable therapist for you I will offer you an initial number of sessions, usually weekly, and I will send through some written terms for you to look at.  You will be welcome take some time to decide whether you would like to start sessions.  During the initial period we will review whether to continue with more sessions, or on a more open-ended bases.

If there is a lot going on, and many strands to consider it is occasionally helpful to have second initial meeting.  With any new client or couple, if I think that your needs and expectations might be better served by a different type of therapy, I will let you during our initial meeting or meetings.  Initial meetings are charged at the same rate as our proposed ongoing 50-minute session time.

About me and my therapy practice

Please refer to my personal website for more details.

I am an Accredited Member of the Íø±¬ÃÅ, and fully subscribe to its Ethical Framework. I offer supervision to qualified and trainee counsellors individuallly and in groups.

I am an experienced practitioner, who will work collaboratively with you to maintain and develop your ethical practice. My approach to supervision is integrative and relational, drawing upon my own clinical work over the past 10 years with diverse clients in a variety of settings. I am calm, curious, open, knowledgeable about different modalities, and will provide empathetic support and challenge for your work with clients. I encourage work with unconscious processes, to help identify what may be going on within the therapeutic and supervisory relationship. My original training used Clarkson’s five-strand model of the therapeutic relationship, and I have deepened my understanding with further study of humanistic, attachment and contemporary psychotherapy theory, together with mindfulness-based therapy, teaching and practice. My supervision practice is supported and under-pinned by integrative mindfulness-based supervision and my own personal mindfulness practice.

I have supervised groups of counsellors in an agency setting, and currently supervise individual therapists in private practice.  In my former career as a barrister, I also had extensive experience of supervising trainee and junior practitioners in their client work.

I charge £75 for a 50 minute supervision session for qualified therapists, and £65 for trainees. I’m be happy to be approached by pairs or a group of therapists looking for regular supervision.  Supervision sessions generally take place in the late morning or afternoons on weekdays.  I  can also offer sessions on Zoom once our work has become established in person
