About me and my therapy practice
Íø±¬ÃÅ
I have over 25 years' experience of working as a professional in Mental Health and have worked privately as a Therapist since 2006. I have also worked as a Secondary School Teacher with an additional pastoral role, and have many years of experience of training in life and communication skills within the commercial world. I have worked in the private health care sector, with clients suffering from eating disorders, both running groups and working with clients individually, and until October 2013 worked for an Outpatient Eating Disorder Service in the NHS Apart from running my private practice I have also worked voluntarily in Clapham with NHS clients who are suffering from anxiety/depression, low self-esteem issues and drug and alcohol addiction.
Whatever your situation I provide a warm, non-judgmental environment for you to explore and untangle thoughts and feelings, and to confront your fears, enabling you to experience a greater sense of emotional wellbeing, more self-awareness, and a more positive view of yourself. In brief, therapy can give you the 'tools' to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
Practice description
I am trained in the psycho-dynamic approach, which pays attention to past experiences that may continue to have a negative influence on the present. My aim would be to help my client develop understanding and insight into such patterns to facilitate a change to more helpful approaches in their life and relationships.
I work medium to long-term with the above approach but also, in the early stages of the therapy, we may focus more on the here-and-now to help with more tangible, immediate problems which might be causing acute distress.
I have also undergone some training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) which is a recommended approach (NICE Guidelines) for people who have experienced single or multiple traumas leading to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Often past trauma, or a series of traumas, can cause someone to become very stuck in old patterns of behaviour such as panic attacks, phobias, inappropriate anger responses, avoidance, generalised anxiety.
I believe that it is very important to be guided by the needs and preferences of each individual client when thinking about how to move forward. To this end the process is always started by doing a thorough assessment of the presenting problems.
My sessions last one hour and I offer both day time and evening sessions.
