About me and my therapy practice

I qualified as a psychotherapist in 1995, accredited through the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). My work is informed by over 40 years鈥 experience in unrelated fields in the voluntary, private and public sector 鈥 which has provided me with considerable experience of the pressures of modern living, wide experience of working relationships, conditions and dilemmas.

My earliest introduction to psychotherapy was when, at 15, a teacher  - inexplicably - lent me a book to read, 鈥淢emories, Dreams, Reflections鈥 by Carl Jung. Simple yet profound, something of Jung鈥檚 perspectives and respect for the inner worlds of diverse people he worked with remains with me during my own challenging work and life experiences. Jung鈥檚 attitude remains a touchstone for my practice, together with perspectives gained from humanistic, crisis intervention, bereavement, existential and person centred training.

I liken my approach to that of planting a bulb. It has everything it needs within it to grow and bloom 鈥 hampered or helped by the environment that is provided. I aim to provide an environment that will stimulate you:  I will listen to your aspirations and concerns, aiming to offer alternative points of view to assist you.

Psychotherapy is a resource for times of trouble and despair when even the most intelligent of us find we cannot think our way out of a dilemma. I believe it is also a great aid to creative development. As a non-stakeholder in your life, friendly but not a friend, I will listen to you, respecting always your network of affiliations, but with a focus upon your needs for nurture and development. A relationship based on that detachment is, I believe, a dynamic process in itself, allowing you to hear your own thoughts without fear of judgement or the needs of others, developing in directions that were previously unspoken, sometimes barely conscious, dreams of how your life might be.

Practice description

My practice is within West Oxfordshire with ample parking nearby. We may choose to work remotely by telephone or internet facility as well as, or instead of, face to face. I work within the 50 minute hour, that is to say that the session will end after 50 minutes, allowing ten minutes at the end of the session for administrative matters and to set the date and time for our next appointment, aiming for regular weekly appointments to maintain momentum.

My first session
