Experiences of Racism Among Eastern European Therapists in the UK: An Interpretative Phenomenological Study

Researcher:
I am an MA Counselling and Psychotherapy student at The Minster Centre, London. I am also a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (Íø±¬ÃÅ).

Purpose of the Research:
This research explores the lived experiences of racism among counsellors and psychotherapists of Eastern European heritage practising in the UK. Despite increasing attention to racial and cultural issues in the therapy profession, the specific experiences of Eastern European therapists remain largely underrepresented in current literature.

Why This Research Matters:
Eastern European communities in the UK often encounter subtle and overt forms of racialised and xenophobic discrimination. This study aims to shed light on how these experiences impact therapists’ professional identities, therapeutic work, and personal well-being. The findings may contribute to more inclusive, culturally competent practice within the counselling and psychotherapy field.

Who Can Take Part:
I am inviting participants who meet the following criteria:

• Registered or trainee counsellors/psychotherapists
• Of Eastern European heritage
• Currently living and practising (or in training) in the UK
• Have experienced racism or xenophobia within personal or professional settings

What Participation Involves:
You will be invited to take part in a one-to-one, semi-structured interview lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Interviews will take place online (via Zoom) at a time that suits you. You will be asked to reflect on personal and professional experiences, with full confidentiality and anonymity assured. Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any point without providing a reason.

Ethical Approval:
This research has received full ethical approval from The Minster Centre Ethics Committee. All data will be handled securely and in line with GDPR and ethical research guidelines.
